Hull City ended their search for a new manager on Wednesday, as Sergej Jakirovic signed a two-year contract with the Tigers. Could he become one of the best managers Hull have seen?

Jakirovic emerged as a leading contender for the post at the MKM Stadium after Hull City sacked Ruben Selles in May.

The 48-year-old arrives from Kayserispor, where he implemented an exciting and attacking philosophy, leading his side to a 13th-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig.

Now, the Bosnian is set to experience his first taste of English football with Hull in the Championship.

Fans will be hopeful he can be a success at the club and become one of the most successful managers they have seen. Let’s find out.

Who is the best Hull City manager – ranking the top 10 by win percentage

We’ve scoured the history books to look at the long line of Hull City managers over the years to determine who is the best, at least when it comes to the metric of win percentages. Here’s the top ten.

10. Peter Taylor – 41.84%

Peter Taylor was appointed manager in November 2002, just weeks before the club moved to the 25,404-seat KC Stadium.

The well-travelled manager would be in charge until June 2006, when he would leave the club for Crystal Palace due to the job he did at Hull.

After a mid-table finish in his first season in Division Three, then League Two, he would have back-to-back promotions, taking the Tigers back to the Championship for the first time since 1990–91.

Taylor took charge of 184 matches, winning 77, giving him a win percentage of 41.84%.

9. Cliff Britton – 41.87%

Hull would prove to be the last club Cliff Britton would take charge of in his managerial career.

It was the club where he would spend the longest period, with his tenure spanning from 1961 to 1969.

Britton would rely on the youth within the club to bring success to the Tigers, winning the 1966 Third Division.

However, he would leave the role in 1969 to become the club’s general manager after 406 matches in charge, winning 170, giving him a win percentage of 41.87%.

8. Brian Little – 42.26%

Brian Little was appointed Hull manager with the club struggling in Division Three at the time, in April 2000, just a month after he left West Bromwich Albion.

Little had a significant impact at the club, as he was able to guide the club on the field towards the play-offs in his first season while things off the pitch were chaotic.

Hull lost in the semi-final to Leyton Orient; however, Little was driving the Tigers to the play-offs once again in 2002, but he decided to resign from the club in February 2002.

During his tenure Hull would win 42.26% of their 97 matches, as they won 41 under Little.

7. Ernest Blackburn – 42.75%

Ernest Blackburn would spend nine years at Hull City, taking charge of 117 matches, winning 50 of those fixtures.

This would see the Tigers have a win percentage of 42.73% during Blackburn’s tenure between December 1936 and January 1946.

It was not an easy period for Blackburn, as he had to see Hull through the Second World War.

6. Harry Chapman – 44.44%

Harry Chapman was appointed manager of Hull in April 1913, leading the club for only a season prior to the First World War.

His tenure would come to an end in September 1914, having managed 45 matches.

Chapman would win 20 of those fixtures, giving him a win percentage of 44.44%.

He would sadly pass away in 1916 from tuberculosis at the age of 36.

5. Colin Appleton – 44.86%

Colin Appleton would have been the most successful manager at Hull City had he only had his first spell at the club, as he won 51.64% of his games.

This first spell saw him manage 91 games, winning 47 between June 1982 and May 1984.

However, he would return to the club in 1989 to manage 16 games at the end of a season but would only achieve one victory in this spell.

4. Ambrose Langley – 44.96%

The second manager of Hull City is also the fifth best manager, according to win percentage.

Ambrose Langley began his tenure as a player-manager between 1905 and 1913, taking charge of 318 matches and winning 143.

During his tenure he would come close to earning promotion from the Second Division on three occasions but would fail to get it over the line before leaving the club in 1913.

3. Raich Carter – 47.13%

Hull City would be the first managerial role for Raich Carter, and it would prove to be a successful period for the club between 1948 and 1951.

He would help the club win the Division Three North title and reach Round 6 of the FA Cup in his first season.

Carter would finish 7th and 10th in Division Two in his next two seasons in charge.

During his tenure he would manage 157 matches, winning 74 of those fixtures.

2. Haydn Green – 49.59%

Haydn Green was in charge of Hull City for three years between May 1931 and March 1934.

He would lead the club in 123 fixtures, winning 61, giving him a win percentage of 49.59%.

1. Fred Stringer – 51.16%

The only manager to have won the majority of their matches in charge of Hull City, making him the best manager according to win percentage.

Fred Stringer took charge of the Tigers in September 1914 and remained in charge until July 1916, leading Hull in 43 matches.

He would see his side win a total of 22 matches during his tenure that coincided with World War One.
