Hull City are on the hunt for a new manager after Ruben Selles was sacked on Thursday morning, despite keeping the club in the Championship for the 2025/26 season.
The Tigers left it until the final day of the campaign to retain their second tier status, with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park seeing them overtake Luton Town, who were beaten 5-3 by West Brom.

However, it was an incredibly disappointing season for the East Yorkshire outfit after they narrowly missed out on the play-offs in 2023/24 under Liam Rosenior and they are now on the hunt for their fourth permanent manager in the space of a year.
Supporters have shared their frustration at Selles’ sacking, and the reason for removing the former Southampton boss from his position has been revealed.
Hull City begin hunt for new manager as reason behind Ruben Selles’ sacking becomes clear
Hull’s owner, Acun Ilicali, has shown over the course of the last 12 months that he has a relatively short fuse when it comes to his managers with Rosenior and Tim Walter also losing their jobs at the MKM Stadium since the end of last season.

Selles was only appointed in December after an incredible first half of the season with Reading in League One while the Royals were hit hard by ownership and financial troubles. Despite a decent start to life at the MKM Stadium, the Tigers were never able to maintain their form and they fell away in the final weeks.
This eventually proved to be Selles’ downfall, and a run of just two wins in Hull’s last nine matches has frustrated the board to the point at which the Spaniard’s position has become untenable and he is now back in the market looking for a new job.
Injuries started to pile up during the final weeks of the season, but that has seemingly not been seen as a good enough reason for such a loss in form and Ilicali now has to find a replacement quickly before the EFL transfer window opens in June.
Ruben Selles needed more time to put his imprint on the Tigers
After such a poor start to the season under Tim Walter, Hull needed a different pair of hands to take over and push the club away from danger.
While Selles was not able to confirm safety ahead of the final day, he did ensure that the Tigers will play their football in the Championship in 2025/26. With a busy summer transfer window ahead he would have been able to improve the squad to allow the team to compete further up the division.
However, Hull are now back to square one and they have left themselves seeking out a new project yet again when they had already paid compensation for another just six months ago.
The announcement of Hull’s first summer signing is expected soon, but that will not ease the pain that supporters are now going through and pressure will pile on Ilicali if the successor does not succeed.
