Kieran McKenna must ensure that Ipswich Town extend their excellent Derby County record at Portman Road

Relegation to the Championship has not served Ipswich Town any favours so far this season.

The Tractor Boys were unbeaten heading into Saturday’s clash with Preston North End at Deepdale, but two draws from two games had not exactly been the sort of start that Kieran McKenna had planned.

The Lilywhites were on the back foot for the vast majority of the 90 minutes on Saturday, but Milutin Osmajic’s penalty inside the first 11 minutes was enough to ensure that the three points stayed in Lancashire.

Ipswich are just a point above the relegation zone in 18th, and the visit of Derby County awaits them at the weekend. However, recent history is on their side as John Eustace prepares for the trip to Suffolk.

Ipswich Town were dominant against Derby County in League One

It’s been two years since these teams last met, with their games against one another in 2022/23 coming in League One.

The third tier will feel like a distant memory for the Tractor Boys, having only played Premier League football last season, but it was wins like those over Derby that helped them reach the Championship just a couple of years ago.

In the first fixture between the two, Wes Burns combined with current Rams winger Kayden Jackson to score the only goal of the game at Portman Road before a dominant Ipswich performance at Pride Park saw McKenna’s side win 2-0.

Derby missed out on the play-offs by just a point that season, while the Suffolk outfit secured promotion by two points to Sheffield Wednesday – proving just how vital those wins were.

The Tractor Boys have had the better of the Rams historically

Throughout the 2010s, meetings between the Rams and Ipswich were commonplace but the last couple of years have seen this particular clash on a hiatus of sorts.

Nonetheless, it is Saturday’s hosts who have the better record in this fixture, winning 39 times. Derby have 29 victories to their name, while there have been 22 draws.

Bizarrely, the first meeting came in 1954, with the East Midlands outfit picking up a 2-0 victory at the Baseball Ground, while Ipswich did win the reverse fixture at Portman Road.

McKenna will be hoping to continue his winning run against Derby this weekend as the Championship gears up for its first international break of the season.
