Now the dust has settled on their Championship play-off final defeat, Sheffield United can plan for another automatic promotion push in 2025/26.

With the transfer window now open until June 10 before closing temporarily due to the Club World Cup, Chris Wilder has already been eyeing some fresh recruits.

Sheffield United have been linked with QPR’s Jimmy Dunne as part of their defensive rebuild process, alongside Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham, who won promotion on loan at Sunderland last term.

Meanwhile, with talk of Gustavo Hamer leaving Sheffield United, the Blades have been linked with several midfield talents.

We exclusively revealed that Jack Rudoni is on Wilder’s radar after his stellar campaign at Coventry City, and the 23-year-old isn’t the only one being linked with a move to Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United target Tommy Doyle is rated highly by Kyle Walker

Sunderland have been linked with Tommy Doyle following their promotion to the Premier League, but Sheffield United and Wrexham have also shown interest in the Englishman.

The former England under-21 star has fallen down the pecking order under manager Vitor Pereira at Wolves, and could be sold for as little as £3 million this summer, according to reporter Darren Witcoop.

Doyle was sent on loan to Sheffield United in the 2022/23 Championship campaign alongside former Manchester City teammate James McAtee, and the 23-year-old produced three goals and four assists in 33 appearances.

That drew the attention of Wolves, who snapped him up from Man City initially on loan in 2023 before signing him permanently in 2024.

Doyle’s best moment in a Blades shirt arguably came against Tottenham in the FA Cup in March 2023, with former Sheffield United academy graduate and City teammate Kyle Walker waxing lyrical over his performance.

“That’s Tommy. That’s Tommy in a nutshell. Good passer of the ball, gets on the ball on the half-turn,” Walker said.

“He likes to spray and he does this a lot in training. The gaffer always gets him on set-pieces when we’re doing certain things ‘cos he’s got good technique. And I think these sort of games you give him space and he can lift his head and he can hurt you.”

Doyle has a huge decision to make

With interest from the Premier League and Championship, the easy decision for Doyle would be to join newly-promoted Sunderland.

However, there are a lot of variables he has to weigh up. Arguably, the Englishman isn’t guaranteed to start under Regis Le Bris in the top flight, but he would be a vital part of Wilder’s plans in the Championship.

Doyle doesn’t want to spend most of the season warming the bench, like he has done at Wolves, and that is why a return to Bramall Lane could favour him.

Either way, Sheffield United, Sunderland, Wrexham or any club that snaps him up will be getting an excellent, progressive ball player in the middle of the park, as highlighted by Walker.
