Sheffield United’s Championship play-off final defeat against Sunderland will have widespread consequences, and EFL Analysis understands that Gustavo Hamer’s exit is inevitable.
Gustavo Hamer is the player Sheffield United fans will fear losing most, but there is an acceptance that losing in the Championship play-off final is the end of the road for the Brazilian.
Hamer was excellent against Sunderland, producing a quality assist for Tyrese Campbell’s opener at Wembley, while running the show for Chris Wilder before being substituted in the 72nd minute.
The 27-year-old was a cut above every single player on the pitch, and even rival fans suggested Hamer is a Premier League-level talent.
Now, with the transfer window on the horizon, several clubs are queuing up for his signature and it could be difficult to stand in his way.

Brentford and Fulham are ‘huge admirers’ of Gustavo Hamer
Everyone knows about Leeds United’s long-standing interest in Hamer. The Whites saw a £13 million bid rejected for him last summer as the Blades slapped an £18m price tag on him.
Speaking to our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis can reveal that Leeds remain ‘hugely keen’ on signing the former Coventry City star, but they will have competition for his signature.
Brentford and Fulham are ‘huge admirers’ of Hamer and have been ‘watching him closely’ in recent weeks, with his performances perhaps being a sign of encouragement.
While Hamer is destined for a top-flight return this summer, Vinicius Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic could also leave Sheffield United.
Souza was outstanding as a ball-winning midfielder for the Blades and is ready for the step up once more, whereas Ahmedhodzic is unlikely to want another Championship season.
Why Premier League teams want Hamer
Sheffield United were fortunate to keep hold of Hamer last summer as he was a shining light during their relegation from the Premier League.
But after their capitulation in the Championship play-off final, all roads point towards England’s top flight for the versatile star, who can operate as a deep-lying playmaker, box-to-box, or in attacking midfield.
Hamer has almost every tool in his locker to become an instant hit wherever he goes, even possessing the power and pace to ghost past players.
Gustavo Hamer’s 2024/25 Championship stats
41 games
9 goals
7 assists
11 big chances created
1.8 key passes per game

Simply put, the Sheffield United maestro is just an outstanding footballer, and one who deserves to be competing in the Premier League.
