An announcement made by Middlesbrough this week has seen fans take to social media to make their feelings clear.

Boro’s 2024/25 season ended in very disappointing fashion, losing to Coventry City on the final day while missing out on a place in the Championship play-offs.

It saw Middlesbrough finish the campaign down in 10th place, their lowest league position since Michael Carrick became manager.

Carrick’s future remains up in the air, with Steve Gibson conducting a review before making a decision.

Meanwhile, the club have this week confirmed their retained list for the campaign.

Middlesbrough fans react to Jonny Howson future update

Jonny Howson was included on the list of players submitted by the club to the EFL who will not be kept on beyond the end of their contracts next month.

However, as Middlesbrough have explained: “Club captain Jonny Howson appears on the list, but discussions will take place in due course with a player who has made 341 appearances for the club since joining in the summer of 2017.”

Boro fans have since taken to social media to respond to a post about the midfielder signing a new deal.

One fan wrote: “Why you even asking that question of course yes.”

A second replied: “Yes but with a big wage cut. Too many injuries this season.”

“100% yes,” another Middlesbrough supporter stated, while a fourth echoed: “100%.”

A fifth Boro fan added: The fact he’s stepped in and done well at centre-back whilst all the others dropped like flies tells you how needed he is. We need leadership and he’s probably the last one left.”

And a sixth tweeted: “Absolutely, give him a 5-year deal as a player/coach whilst he goes for his license and utilise his knowledge and experience to bring on the academy players”.

Every player leaving Middlesbrough in 2025

While Howson’s new deal is a work in progress, Anfernee Dijksteel will be departing on June 30, 2025.

He is the only player to leave from the senior team who was on a permanent contract, with Mark Travers, Ryan Giles, Kelachi Iheanacho, Sammy Iling-Junior, and Ben Doak all leaving at the end of their loans.

From the academy, however, a number of faces will be leaving the North East outfit.

Including scholars, all of Terrell Agyemang, George Gitau, Jack Hannah, Afonso Lindo, Dan Nkrumah, Nathan Simpson, Alfie Myers-Smith, Jack Stott, Cain Sykes, Pharrell Willis, Addis Dore, Felix Elliott, Noah Muwana, Fin O’Gorman, Ethan Scott and Judah Tawiah are departing.
