Middlesbrough fans issue response as ‘overrated’ player confirms contact over transfer

Middlesbrough could move a number of players on in the 2025 summer transfer window.

We have previously revealed that Hayden Hackney is the most likely player to be sold by Middlesbrough in the coming months.

Hackney is an academy product, and all money made on his potential transfer would be pure profit as a result.

Away from the midfielder, a couple more names have been linked with potential summer exits.

EFL Analysis understands that Middlesbrough are unlikely to sell Finn Azaz despite interest from the likes of Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, we reported earlier this year that Rav van den Berg could leave, and the Bundesliga is a potential destination.

Now, the Dutchman has been discussing transfer interest this week, much to the dismay of Middlesbrough fans.

Middlesbrough fans respond to Rav van den Berg transfer comments

Speaking to Dutch outlet De Stentor, the centre-back confirmed that his agent has been in contact to tell him of transfer interest.

He said: “I still support the decision to go to Middlesbrough. The city may not be the most beautiful in England and I don’t like fish and chips. But it has been good for my development, because I have played a lot.

“My brother Sepp took a different path by transferring to Liverpool, a big club. But he has done very well in a roundabout way, he now plays almost everything at Brentford. That is also important to me and decisive in a choice, I want playing time. I did tell my agent that he should only call if a club is very serious. Did he call after that? Yes. But I can’t say anything more about it.”

Boro fans have since reacted, with one saying: “Overrated anyway, cash in and get a proper Championship defender who’s not injured every few weeks.”

A second added: “Last season he was poor. Maybe with having that injury. He doesn’t sound committed to us. We can’t be having players like that.”

“Made of glass, cash out,” another Middlesbrough fan demanded.

A fourth replied: “Bye bye, absolute cart horse and ball watches all game,” with a fifth echoing: “Bye bye.”

While another tweeted: “Get him gone. Him and the caravan he pulls every game.”

Middlesbrough summer transfer plans

We shared recently that Middlesbrough are looking at around five positions to strengthen this summer.

Boro are ‘desperate’ for a new right-back now that Luke Ayling is their only natural option in that position.

It would have made sense for Middlesbrough to be targeting a new centre-back in the coming months as well, after selling Matt Clarke to Derby County in January and not replacing him.

But if Van den Berg goes, it will be even more imperative that the Teessiders bring another stopper in.
