Middlesbrough need to find a replacement manager after sacking Michael Carrick, and fans have had their say.

Michael Carrick has left Boro after nearly three seasons, in which the club’s league position has decreased in each campaign.

We revealed prior to Carrick going that Steve Cooper was top of Middlesbrough’s shortlist.

Former Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has emerged as the leading candidate for the role as well.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough need to pay nearly £5m for Danny Rohl if they want the German from Sheffield Wednesday.

Now, fans have reacted to who they want to replace Carrick in the dugout for next season.

Middlesbrough fans name their preferred Michael Carrick replacement

It was reported on Tuesday that Boro’s shortlist is now Cooper, Rohl, and Edwards.

And Middlesbrough fans have been reacting to that said trio on social media, making it clear Rohl is their preferred candidate.

Meanwhile, supporters are largely against Edwards being the man to join, though they believe it’s likely to be him.

One fan wrote: “I just don’t believe that Edwards is the best of the applicants. Will be disappointed with him.”

Another replied: “Edwards was a leading contender when Carrick ‘was appointed almost three years ago, and the 42-year-old has bolstered his reputation significantly since then thanks to his achievements with Luton Town’. His reputation is in the gutter.”

“It’s going to be Edwards always was, Scott knows him and it’s the safe option,” a third fan stated.

A fourth added: “Would be fairly happy with Cooper, gutted with Edwards and buzzing with Rohl! Blatantly going to be Edwards, isn’t it.”

Another tweeted: “Rohl, anybody else, last choice Edwards.”

While a sixth suggested: “If Edwards is appointed, then those 15k season ticket sales so far will still be 15k come August!”

Rob Edwards record at Luton Town

Edwards took over at Luton in 2022 and helped them win the play-offs in the 2022/23 season.

2023/24 saw the club competing in the Premier League, suffering relegation straight back down to the Championship.

The Hatters have since been demoted to League One, with Edwards relieved of his duties before the most recent campaign came to a close.

In total, the 42-year-old took charge of 103 Luton fixtures, winning 33, drawing 23 and losing 47.

Edwards averaged 1.18 points per game, scoring an average of 1.35 and conceding 1.72 per match.
