Middlesbrough have continued to operate in the transfer market and have landed another signing.

Sverre Nypan has become Rob Edwards’ fifth signing of the summer after he joined on loan from Manchester City.

Nypan, 18, is one of football’s most promising talents and was previously linked to Manchester United and clubs around Europe.

His signing is a big one in terms of stature, but also in terms of a rule that could force Boro to rethink their transfer strategy.

Middlesbrough now have a full squad due to loan rule

EFL registration rules mean that clubs must submit 25-man squads for the season ahead.

There are some exceptions to the rules, with anyone under the age of 21 exempt from this and available to play at any time.

However, this doesn’t apply to loan signings, meaning that Nypan has to be registered.

This takes Edwards’ squad to a total of 25 and unless anyone under the age of 21 comes in, the only way Boro will see new additions is if bodies leave the Riverside Stadium.

Rob Edwards hints at new signings

Edwards has much to ponder about his squad going into the final weeks of the transfer window and after his side’s impressive 3-0 win on the road against Millwall, hinted that he will plan to make more signings.

He said: “What we saw and found and felt on the training pitch when we first came in helped us lean towards where we’re at at the moment.

“If players can do both and play in different systems, like Callum Brittain, who can do both, those characteristics are key for me. They’re really important. So we can go to a back four tonight [Doncaster] when we’re chasing things more. To have that flexibility in games will help us.”
