Middlesbrough’s latest social media post indicates George Edmundson could be available for the clash against Southampton.
That’s despite him suffering a nasty black eye against West Brom after a clash of heads with Baggies man Aune Heggebo. The former Ipswich player tried to continue, but had to be withdrawn due to concussion concerns. His eye swelled up and Edwards confirmed his Boro star couldn’t see out of it after the game.
Even more frustratingly for Edmundson, the 2-1 win over West Brom was his first start of the season. He made 26 appearances for the club last term after joining on loan from Ipswich before signing permanently, scoring one goal in that time.
Now, the club appear to have suggested Edmundson isn’t completely ruled out of his action for top of the table Boro’s trip to Southampton on Saturday.

George Edmundson spotted in Middlesbrough team photo ahead of Southampton clash
On Tuesday, Boro posted their team photo for the season, and Edmundson was in the front row – shiner and all.
Fans on social media immediately noticed his injury, with one writing: “George – ouch, that’s a shiner and a half!”
“Edmundson’s eye is a stitcher on school photo day admin,” another joked.
Despite his gruesome injury, Edmundson was still clearly keen to be involved – and the same could be said for the trip to St Mary’s.
What has Rob Edwards said about George Edmundson’s injury?
Speaking about Edmundson’s injury after the West Brom win, Edwards left the idea of him playing open, saying: “George’s eye was bad. He can’t see out of one eye and it looked nasty. He wanted to, but it was impossible for him to stay on. We couldn’t keep him on but hopefully it’s not too bad. He looked like Rocky at the end of one of his fights! He’s alright. He’s okay.
“We’ll have to see how he is. I don’t think there was any concern from a concussion point of view, he just couldn’t see. It closed up so quickly. Hopefully he’ll be okay for next week. He’s a real warrior and wanted to carry on but that was impossible. Matty has to go to centre-back and we do what’s needed to win the game. We showed that.
“We have to try and manage it and get that right. We’ll hope we can get a good week, we’ll see how that goes. We’ll see how George is. Dael is progressing well. It’s not all bad news, but we have to manage Darragh and see how it is.”
Boro will be hoping he can be involved when they travel to Southampton on Saturday afternoon and aim to get their first win at St Mary’s since 2003.
