Andri Gudjohnsen explains why he chose ‘underdog’ Blackburn Rovers with ‘special connection’ touted

It’s been a bizarre start to the season for Blackburn Rovers, and they have quickly become the focus of the Championship – something that Andri Gudjohnsen may not have expected.

After heavy rain saw their game against Ipswich Town abandoned on Saturday, supporters have been left in limbo as the EFL work to come to a decision of how the game should be settled.

In 2015, Blackpool and Huddersfield Town’s clash ended as a 0-0 draw, despite being called off in the 48th minute. However, for Rovers captain Todd Cantwell, the only option is a home win.

Nevertheless, it was perhaps not the easiest of ways for Gudjohnsen to help get settled in after joining Blackburn, but he has now revealed why he chose to make the switch to Lancashire.

Andri Gudjohnsen talks through Blackburn Rovers transfer

The son of the iconic Eidur Gudjohnsen, Andri made his debut for Rovers against Watford in a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road after the international break. He then came off the bench in Blackburn’s abandoned game against Ipswich, although those minutes do not count for now.

The Icelandic striker has now explained why he chose to move to Ewood Park in the summer, as he returned to the country of his birth. He said (via: Lancashire Telegraph): “It was really attractive. It was one of the reasons why I wanted to come to Blackburn Rovers because I think the league is a great league.

“I’ve had my talks with players who had either played before or are playing in the Championship. I had some sort of idea what the league was about. It’s a league where you can show yourself but where you can also grow as a player. The environment also, I like being in the UK. I like England.

“Obviously, I was born in London. I feel a bit of a special connection with English people and I think the environment is a place where I want to be and so I’m just really happy. Us as a squad, we’ve got the potential, we’ve got the players, we’ve got the quality, and I think we’ll just get better with time.

“I’ve got the experience of being the underdog a bit, being an Icelander and playing for the Icelandic national team, so it’s a really nice feeling always after a game when you beat the odds and shock everyone a bit.

“You mentioned time and that is going to make this squad better. You’ll get to know each other, people will find their feet.”

Andri Gudjohnsen will grow into a fantastic player

At 23, Gudjohnsen is at the perfect age for Ismael to mould him into the complete forward at Blackburn in the coming years.

While we have only seen snippets of him in the Championship, he has proven himself on the international stage, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances for Iceland.

Blackburn make the trip to Charlton Athletic at the weekend, and Gudjohnsen will be hoping that he is handed his first start for the club after trying to make an impact as a substitute.

Ismael will be keen to get his new striker fully involved as soon as possible, and with the former Gent man getting adjusted to life in the second tier, this could be the chance to let him shine.
