Mikey Johnston makes honest admission after first full season at West Brom

Mikey Johnston is approaching his first full season as a permanent West Bromwich Albion player.

Johnston dazzled on loan at the Hawthorns last season before the winger made his move to West Brom permanent in the summer.

This season has been difficult for the Republic of Ireland international, who hasn’t quite hit the heights of his loan spell and the winger would be the first to admit that.

Mikey Johnston not happy with goal return at West Brom

After falling behind in the pecking order at his boyhood club Celtic, Johnston was sent on loan to the Baggies for the second half of the 23/24 season.

At the time, it appeared an uninspiring addition, but the winger made a huge impact, scoring seven goals in 18 games.

However, despite a full season under his belt in the West Midlands, Johnston has only found the back of the net three times.

While his overall goal contribution is up, the 25-year-old confessed to BBC Radio West Midlands that he needs to improve his goalscoring tally.

“I should have scored a lot more this season,” Johnston said. “I’m always trying to get on the end of crosses. It’s about getting into the right positions. But it’s given us confidence that we’re creating a lot of chances.”

West Brom’s season could be defined by Coventry game

There isn’t a bigger game in the Championship this weekend than Coventry City vs West Brom.

Sixth vs seventh, three points separating the two, it could make or break someone’s season.

Coventry are preparing for a record attendance at the Coventry Building Society Arena and as the hosts with a three-point gap on Tony Mowbray’s men, will be the favourites.

West Brom know that three points will see them leapfrog the Sky Blues due to their superior goal difference. It’s these sorts of games that Johnston needs to step up in.
