Middlesbrough and Newcastle United fans have reacted to rivals Sunderland winning the Championship play-off final.

Sunderland beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Wembley Stadium, booking their place in the Premier League for 2025/26.

The Black Cats came from 1-0 down, beginning when Eliezer Mayenda scored an equaliser and celebrated with his injured teammate.

Tommy Watson then netted the winner in what is set to be his final game as a Sunderland player.

Now, both Middlesbrough and Newcastle fans have been discussing Regis Le Bris’ team winning promotion.

Middlesbrough and Newcastle fans on Sunderland Championship play-off win

Middlesbrough will spend another season in the Championship after missing out on the play-offs during the final day of the normal campaign.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are fighting to secure Champions League football next season.

It’s fair to say that neither set of fans is thrilled by Sunderland winning promotion.

One fan wrote: “Embarrassing for us that they’ve went up before us after everything that happened to them just goes to show what happens when you have a good manager and good owners.”

A second added: “What a difference a tactically astute manager that understands in-game management can make. I am sure Carrick is standing somewhere with his hands in his pockets doing —- all as normal.”

“Meanwhile at Boro, the hierarchy are still sucking their thumbs over the most obvious decision known to man … Embarrassments.”

A fourth wrote: “I’ve said a few things last 24hrs but all rivalries aside. I’d like to commiserate Sunderland on their 25/26 relegation from the Premier League.”

Another stated: “Playing Sunderland away at 12pm on a Saturday after a European night in Naples… I feel sick.”

A sixth wrote: “I’m already excited about the day next season when Sunderland are relegated. Nobody deserves it more.”

When was the last Tyne–Wear derby

Middlesbrough and Sunderland have been playing each other regularly since the pair were both relegated in 2017.

However, the Tyne-Wear derby has been a rarity over the last several years.

The last meeting between Newcastle and Sunderland came on January 6, 2024, in the FA Cup.

The Magpies won that tie 3-0 thanks to a Dan Ballard own goal and a brace from Alexander Isak.
