Sheffield United and Sunderland faced off in the Championship play-off final on Saturday afternoon.

Sheffield United were predicted to win the final ahead of kick-off at Wembley Stadium and had the much brighter start.

The Blades dominated proceedings in the first 45 and were rewarded for their efforts in the 24th minute.

Gustavo Hamer earned praise from fans after his brilliant run and pass to set up Tyrese Campbell, who made it 1-0.

The Blades had a goal disallowed by VAR later in the first half, with the Black Cats probably lucky to only be 1-0 down at the break.

It looked as though Sheffield United were going to beat Sunderland to win promotion to the Premier League.

However, the North East side looked much improved in the second half and scored an equaliser in the 76th minute via Eliezer Mayenda.

Tommy Watson then netted a late winner to book the club’s place in the English top flight.

What Eliezer Mayenda did to Luke O’Nien as Sunderland beat Sheffield United

It was by no means a masterclass performance, especially in the first 45, but Le Bris’ side were excellent in the second half and deserved their equalising goal.

It came via Mayenda, who was also key in the semi-final against Coventry City.

Now, the BBC have shared what the forward did when celebrating his goal, which some fans may have missed.

They wrote: “We’re seeing Luke O’Nien celebrating with Eliezer Mayenda on our screens after that equaliser.

“The Sunderland goalscorer gently hugged O’Nien so as not to do any more damage to that shoulder which was dislocated in the opening three minutes.”

Luke O’Nien injury update

O’Nien was injured versus Sheffield United after just a few minutes of action.

An update on the defender’s issues came live on Sky Sports during coverage of the game via Jonathan Oakes.

“It’s a dislocated shoulder for Luke O’Nien, picked up by trying to stop Kieffer Moore score that header.

“Luke’s wife is with him in the changing room where medical staff have been able to put his shoulder back in.”
