Newest Sheffield Wednesday star’s incredible history with Owls legend Liam Palmer that goes beyond cup victory

For Sheffield Wednesday, Tuesday evening was the stuff of dreams as they progressed through to the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Few had given the Owls a chance against Leeds United, including a Hillsborough icon in the form of Chris Powell, but their former coach was left shocked as the South Yorkshire side prevailed over their West Yorkshire in S6.

Jamal Lowe forced Karl Darlow to turn the ball into his own net as the home side opened the scoring against Premier League opposition, but ex-Sheffield United man Jayden Bogle equalised soon after.

Nevertheless, it was Sheffield Wednesday who prevailed on penalties, as Leeds failed to score a single one of their three. It means that a young, daring Owls side now find themselves in the next round. For one starlet, it was the dream debut alongside a player who he knows very well.

Will Grainger and Liam Palmer have extensive Sheffield Wednesday history

Henrik Pedersen has a very limited squad right now, and using young players in the cup is the best way to give the likes of Barry Bannan a rest – even if they do come on in the second-half.

But it is also a tactic that is allowing him to bring new talent into the team, and Will Grainger looks to be the newest star at Hillsborough.

After coming through the ranks at Sheffield Wednesday, the 16-year-old is making all the right strides as he lives out his dream in blue and white. For club icon Liam Palmer, the teenager is not a new face, having awarded him an Owls jacket nearly 10 years ago after the striker scored 100 goals at grassroots level.

On Tuesday, they lined up together arm-in-arm as their team won on penalties against Leeds.

This is just the start for Will Grainger as a senior Owl

At just 16, it is perhaps a little too early to be calling Grainger a senior player. However, he showed great maturity against the Whites and knew exactly what his task was coming off the bench.

He played in the final 25 minutes of the game, and while he made just six touches, it must be said that his job was to offer an outlet up top as Sheffield Wednesday came under plenty of Leeds pressure.

Nonetheless, the experience will serve him incredibly well, and Grainger will be looking for more minutes in the first team in the coming weeks and months.

However, the Owls themselves will still be looking to add more senior players and Premier League loanees, especially as the transfer window edges closer to shutting.
