Norwich City fans will not believe what’s happened to Jonathan Rowe as shock Marseille exit looms

Jonathan Rowe’s move to Marseille has not gone to plan at all, and the former Norwich City man may now be about to leave the French club already.

The young winger sparked controversy around Carrow Road when he forced through a move to Marseille in 2023. That loan switch became a permanent deal last summer, delivering Norwich City a cool £14m cash injection.

That made him one of Norwich’s most expensive sales of all time, but the big-money move has not really worked out for Rowe.

After struggling to pin down a regular starting spot with Marseille, the England Under-21 starlet has now hit a new hurdle there and it could end up being a decisive one.

Jonathan Rowe involved in major bust-up at Marseille

Reports in France over the weekend claimed that Rowe and his Marseille teammate Adrien Rabiot were involved in a bust-up in the dressing room after a 1-0 defeat to Rennes on Friday night.

As per national newspaper La Provence, it is said Rowe allegedly slapped Rabiot. The incident occurred around 11pm, with local journalists claiming they heard murmurs of the fallout from the press area.

Apparently, Rowe was unhappy with criticism of his performance and tempers flared behind the scenes resulting in a physical altercation that had to be broken up by manager Roberto De Zerbi.

It is now believed the two players have been excluded from the squad, and the future of Rowe in particular is now said to be in major doubt.

Norwich City have no chance of Jonathan Rowe reunion

With claims that Rowe will now be allowed to move on, most likely on loan, there is obviously bound to be speculation that the player could return to Norwich City.

Reports suggest there is interest in England and in Serie A, but dropping down to the Championship is unlikely at this stage.

Rowe left Norwich to progress his career and play at the top level, and despite this latest setback, it’s still probable that a Premier League outfit would make a move for him.

Rowe was a standout star for England in their Under-21 European Championship victory this summer, and unless Norwich get promoted this season, they’ll likely never see the youngster in their yellow and green kit again.

Still, if Marseille do sell Rowe, the Canaries will get a cut of the transfer fee. Norwich included a 25% sell-on clause in the original deal to sell Rowe to the Ligue 1 club.
