How Roma can help Norwich City secure surprise £4.25m windfall thanks to smart sell-on clause

Norwich City have been so busy signing players this summer it’s easy to forget about the players that have left the club recently, but one former Canaries star could deliver them a very nice bonus.

With Liam Manning at the helm and a bunch of new players coming through the door, it’s clear to see why Norwich City are now one of the favourites for promotion in 2025/26.

It is thought Pelle Mattsson will be next to arrive at Carrow Road, with the Danish midfielder expected to cost no more than £3m.

And now, it looks like Norwich could have that fee paid for, and then some, thanks to one piece of business they did more than a year ago.

AS Roma turn to Jonathan Rowe with £17m move mooted

That’s because of something of a transfer merry-go-round occurring across Europe right now that’ll involve former Norwich City star Jonathan Rowe.

Leeds United were battling Marseille for winger Igor Paixao, but it was the French outfit that won the fight in the end.

According to a report from Calcio Mercato, AS Roma were also keen on Paixao, but may now look at Rowe instead after being priced out of a move for the former.

It is said that Paixao may well take the place of Rowe at Marseille, leaving the young Englishman surplus to requirements. The asking price for Rowe is currently set at €20m (£17m), and the report claims Atalanta are also interested.

Such a deal would be of benefit to Norwich, who included a 25% sell-on clause in the original deal to sell Rowe to Marseille, with a sum of around £4.25m set to be sent directly to the Canaries if a transfer does come to fruition.

Norwich City probably hoped for more cash back on Jonathan Rowe deal

Rowe’s Norwich City exit was far from smooth, with the youngster pushing for a move away from the club and initially struggling to adjust to life in France.

He managed to turn things around in the end and had a fairly successful season, registering three goals and three assists. Rowe was also a key part of the England Under-21s’ victory at the recent European Championships.

Norwich fans haven’t quite forgiven Rowe yet for his tumultuous exit. However, helping the club bank another £4.25m would go a long way towards making amends.

Still, given Rowe’s immense potential at the time of his departure, we’re sure Norwich were probably hoping that 25% sell-on clause would end up generating a more substantial payday in the long run.
