‘One of the best at this level’ – Former Ipswich Town striker thinks it’s ‘vital’ that Norwich City keep star man

BBC Final Score pundit Aaron McClean thinks that Norwich City’s promotion hopes hinge on keeping one man at the club.

Liam Manning’s side returned to winning ways with an impressive 2-0 win against Blackburn Rovers after a defeat to Middlesbrough the previous week.

It was a much-needed boost after a turbulent week that saw Marcelino Nunez leave Norwich to join Ipswich Town.

Another key player in Borja Sainz signed for Porto but McClean, who is a former Ipswich man himself, has said there is one player that the Canaries cannot afford to sell.

Norwich City must keep Josh Sargent

Both goals were scored by Josh Sargent in Norwich’s win against Blackburn to take his tally to five goals in four games and become the Championship’s top goalscorer.

Sargent has been linked with Premier League clubs all summer long but is still at Carrow Road and McClean thinks that their promotion hopes hinge on if the USMNT star stays.

Writing on BBC Sport, he said: “”It would be a huge loss if Norwich were to lose Josh Sargent – I don’t know if you can replace him, especially at this late stage.

“He’s pivotal to Norwich’s ambitions. They want to get out of the Championship and into the Premier League and in order to do that you have to keep your best players, and he is one of the best strikers at this level.

“It’s vital that they keep hold of him and he keeps doing what he has been doing, I think he could go and play in the Premier League. That’s how good I think he is.”

Josh Sargent guarantees goals

Goals win games and with Sargent leading the line for the Canaries, Norwich are going to score goals.

With four games gone he is already a quarter of the way to 20 goals, a landmark you want your strikers to be hitting if you want promotion.

NameGoals scored
Josh Sargent (Norwich City)5
Haji Wright (Coventry City)4
Victor Torp (Coventry City)4
Carlton Morris (Derby County)4
Scott Twine (Bristol City)3

Despite losing a number of high-profile talents, keeping the 25-year-old is a cheat code for the club and the reason why Norwich will be up there at the end of the season.
