Plymouth Argyle had a terrible start to the season but things are starting to look up, and it’s all down to one summer signing who’s now on fire.
After being relegated from the Championship, many had expected Plymouth Argyle to be one of the top teams in League One fighting for promotion.
Tom Cleverley began his reign with Argyle by overseeing four straight league defeats. After a 4-0 hammering at the hands of fellow relegated club Cardiff City, things looked pretty dire.
However, Plymouth are now living up to early League One predictions after serving Stockport Town a battering of their own this weekend with a 4-2 win at Home Park.

Lorent Tolaj hits the ground running at Plymouth Argyle
Obviously, that result was a team effort, with goals from Caleb Watts, Bradley Ibrahim, an own goal, and yet another strike from new signing Lorent Tolaj. That comes after the latter bagged a brace in midweek to guide Argyle to a win in the Vertu Trophy.
After his latest outing, Plymouth fans have expressed their delight at having such a prolific and exciting striker in their ranks.
One fan on Twitter/X wrote: “His work rate is astonishing. His finishing fills you with confidence and his hold-up play is beyond reproach. Add them together and you have what we need “a first class striker”.
“He’s a menace. Never lets defenders settle. Has a great touch and a hammer of a left foot. Great start and with better service he’ll score more,” another added.
A third said, “He seems decent, hold-up play is good. Knows where the back of the net is,” while a fourth wrote, “It’s going to be a case of getting him good service.”
However, while the impact of the new signing is incredibly positive right now, a lot of fans are wary of what the future holds.
One Argyle fan wrote: “This bloke is so good he won’t be with us long enough for us to build a promotion team.”
Another said: “A complete all-rounder number nine. Will no doubt be playing in the Championship next season.”
One even jokingly tweeted, “£1.5m to Stoke in January no doubt,” in reference to the sale of Maksym Talovierov this summer.

What Tom Cleverley said about Lorent Tolaj
Tolaj cost just over £1m for Plymouth, and he’s already proving his worth. He’s a player Tom Cleverley clearly appreciates, too.
On the new arrival, he told BBC Sport: “Even if he’d had zero goals up to this point I would be telling you he’s going to be a really good striker for this football club. But the fact that he’s shown what a good finisher is, he’s scored all three goals with his left foot but he can hit them with his right.
“He’s someone who’s on a real quick upward trajectory through the leagues of English football – I don’t think he’s done here. I’m delighted that we’ve got that one done for sure. We’ve got the right number nine and we’re pleased he’s ours.”
The Argyle boss went on to praise Tolaj’s key attributes, adding: “You can see he’s an all-rounder – he’ll hold the ball up, he’ll compete, he’ll press, and in front of goal is where he’s really impressed me in training.
“He’s very calm, he’s got good power in both feet. I think my heart rate slowed down when he went through, I was really confident that he’d score.”
