‘Respectfully suggest’… Sunderland journalist fires back at what fans should not be doing ahead of play-offs

One Sunderland journalist has had his say on the fans’ behaviour directed towards the Black Cats squad recently.

Whilst Sunderland’s spot in the Championship play-offs in the 2024/25 campaign has been confirmed for some time, the Black Cats haven’t managed to continue with a positive momentum as they approach the end of the normal season.

Regis Le Bris’ side have now been handed four defeats on the spin in the Championship, with the most recent falling on their travels against Oxford United.

Many fans have suggested that Sunderland’s slump comes from the departure of Mike Dodds back in February, whilst it could also be argued that the French boss’ desire to chop-and-change his side could also be at fault.

Spirits are somewhat low in the fanbase, with the Oxford defeat certainly stirring up some anger amongst some fans…

Sunderland journalist Michael Graham bemoans fans turning on the young Black Cats side

Several Sunderland players have been placed under the spotlight at the club recently, in particular the younger ranks within the side.

Notably, Tommy Watson has been singled out recently for his poor showings, something that has been deemed to be a common theme since he agreed to move to Brighton following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Following the defeat to Oxford United, young midfielder Chris Rigg was also handed stick by a pocketful of the away support, something that Sunderland journalist Michael Graham took issue with.

On X, Graham said: “No one likes losing games, but I’d respectfully suggest that two weeks before the play-offs start is NOT the time to turn on a young team who have finished fourth over a few completely meaningless results at the end of a really progressive season.

“Back them. Support them.”

Regis Le Bris must galvanise the troops ahead of momentum builder vs QPR

In a final roll of the dice of the regular season, Sunderland boss Le Bris will surely want to make sure that his side goes into the play-offs with a win under their belt.

It looks likely that they will face off against an in-form Bristol City outfit in the Championship play-off semi-finals, and they will need to match a side that is certainly in high spirits.

Infront of what could be a fairly agitated Stadium of Light crowd away at QPR on the final day of the season, a win would mean far more than the three points added in the table, it would boost the spirits of the team and supporters, something that can’t be underplayed at such a crucial stage of the campaign.
