Salford City were the centre of media interest when the club were acquired by the Class of 92 in 2014; however, the spotlight has seemingly moved to Wrexham.
The club experienced some incredibly quick success as they won four promotions in five seasons to reach the English Football League in 2019.
There were strong beliefs by many within football that Salford City could continue their rise, maybe not as rapidly, and reach the Premier League within a few years.
However, this has yet to come to pass, and Salford are currently languishing in League Two, where they have been since 2019.
As they struggled to find their way up through the English football pyramid, Salford’s fans have had to watch as Wrexham earned back-to-back promotions to the Championship.
This has led to Salford rethinking their ownership model earlier this summer, and now they have taken further actions to get over that hurdle and bring further success to the club.
Salford City signal intent with their latest appointment from City Football Group
Salford City have appointed Gavin Fleig as their new Chief Executive Officer, beginning this role from October 1.
The club shared the news about the appointment on their website, stating that it marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Salford City.

Fleig has been given the task of leading the strategic, operational, and commercial direction of the Club, with a clear focus on delivering competitive football success, driving promotion up the ranks of English football, and establishing sustainable commercialisation models for future growth.
He was previously in a similar role with City Football Group, now one of the biggest organisations within the sport, perhaps signalling the intention of Salford moving forward.
Gary Neville’s thoughts on Gavin Fleig’s appointment
The pair of Gary Neville and David Beckham are now part of the new ownership model at Salford City.
They bought out the rest of the Class of ’92, meaning former Manchester United teammates Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Phil Neville are no longer shareholders as part of the new ownership group.
This has given the pair greater say in the running of the club, and so Neville has given his view on the appointment of Fleig.

He said: “Gavin is exactly the kind of leader we’ve been looking for – strategic, passionate, and forward-thinking. His belief in the Club’s potential is only matched by his determination to make things happen.
“We’ve got big goals at Salford City, and with Gavin at the helm, we’re confident we can deliver on them.”
