Sam Parkin shares grim prediction for Charlton Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers, fans will hate it if he’s right

Wycombe and Charlton fans endured a drab goalless draw in the first leg of the League One play-off semi-final, but Sam Parkin thinks we could be set for even worse next time out.

Wycombe’s early-season form had many predicting they could secure automatic promotion, or perhaps, even challenge the might of Birmingham City for the League One title.

Those predictions and hopes faded fast in the New Year when Matt Bloomfield departed to take the Luton Town job, and consistency has been hard to come by since Mike Dodds took over.

That’s left Wycombe to fight it out in the play-offs with Charlton Athletic, who just seemed to get better and better as the season went on.

Supporters were divided by the goalless draw played out at Adams Park this evening, though. Wycombe fans are happy to finally see some solid defensive work and organisation from the Chairboys, but the Addicks supporters expected better from their boys.

What Sam Parkin said after goalless draw between Wycombe and Charlton

Discussing the action after the final whistle, EFL expert and former striker Sam Parkin offered his thoughts on BBC Radio London, and he can foresee a situation where the return leg at The Valley could be just as boring for spectators.

He said: “The way Wycombe set up tonight, in a few days time we’re probably going to be served up something similar.

“If Charlton score first in the second leg it may change but if it’s Wycombe it’ll make it even harder.”

Hopefully, Parkin is wrong and we get a corker of a game on Thursday night, but there’s every chance that Wycombe will try to stifle their opponents and snatch something away from home.

In today’s game, there were seven shots each for both sides, but only five of those 14 efforts were actually on target (two for Wycombe, three for Charlton). Not exactly an eventful affair at either end, then.

Charlton have the potential to thrash Wycombe in the second leg

Less than a month ago, Charlton had annihilated Wycombe 4-0 at Adams Park, so to come here again now and not be able to break the Chairboys down, they must be a little disappointed.

However, what that does tell us is that Charlton have the ability and the potential to really take the game to Wycombe in the reverse fixture at home.

Charlton have been in great form at the back end of the season, and they will surely fancy themselves with the crowd behind them at The Valley.

If anything, we half hope they do go all the way, even if it’s just to see Nathan Jones winding people up in the Championship next year.
