Wycombe Wanderers fans believe Mike Dodds finally made progress despite ‘low quality’ draw vs Charlton Athletic

Bringing a fascinating weekend of play-offs action to an end this weekend, Wycombe Wanderers and Charlton Athletic played out a bore draw at Adams Park on Sunday evening.

For much of the League One campaign, Wycombe Wanderers looked set for automatic promotion. They were pipped in the final weeks of the season by Hollywood-backed history makers Wrexham, though.

In the end, Wycombe actually slipped down to fourth place in the final table, behind a resurgent Stockport County side.

Standing in their way of promotion now are Charlton Athletic, but the tie will have to be settled at The Valley, after a goalless draw on Wycombe turf this weekend.

What Wycombe Wanderers fans are saying about Mike Dodds

You might have thought that most fans would be a bit disappointed with a 0-0 draw, but in fairness, Wycombe supporters have seen their side take a beating more than a few times in recent weeks.

That includes a terrible 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Charlton just a couple of weeks ago, so you can half understand why Wycombe fans are pretty pleased with what they saw from their side on Sunday evening.

Reacting to the result and more importantly the performance on Twitter/X, one fan said: “Brilliant first half from us, positive and trying new things. More than happy at this stage.”

Another added, “Playing with intensity and integrity which is what we were missing,” while a third said, “If we played like this since Dodds came in, we could’ve been in a race with Birmingham for the title.”

Indeed, most fans were in optimistic spirits, writing, “Amazing performance today, definitely showed we were better,” and “I’ll take that. We are SO much better away from home this season [too].”

However, fans all agreed Richard Kone, who is linked with a big move this summer, has not been looking good of late.

On his performance today, fans said, “We need some potency up top and it ain’t Richard right now.”

Wycombe vs Charlton was a ‘low quality’ game

Meanwhile, Charlton fans were far unhappier, but they aimed most of their dismay at the referee, Farai Hallam.

Addicks fans believe Richard Kone should have been sent off in the first half, leading to a lot of comments online about how the match was ruined by poor officiating.

Supporters wrote, “Ref needs to sort himself out,” and “Referee couldn’t make it anymore obvious that he’s a Wycombe supporter.”

Another wrote: “Ref has completely lost control of the game already.”

Still, it wasn’t a great performance from the players, either, and fans were quick to point that out. One said: “Nervy, scrappy, will take this result and get out of here.” Another added: “Very, very low quality first half of football that. And the officiating was somehow even worse. We need to wake up.”

Some were more positive, though. One fan praised the substitutions made by Nathan Jones, writing: “Karoy and Thierry made such a big difference to the team when they came on. We were much more of a threat! Solid end to the match should give us confidence going into Thursday nights game.”

Another said: “We’ve not lost or conceded. Onto the big one on Thursday. With a full crowd we’ll be rocking.”

The two teams go head-to-head again on Thursday night at The Valley. Hopefully, we get a more entertaining game that time.
