Sheffield United strengthened their Premier League promotion charge last night by beating Coventry City 3-1.
The Blades sit top of the league for now, with promotion rivals Leeds United and Burnley playing at 3pm.
At 83 points with just seven games to go, they’ve given themselves a very real chance of getting back into the top flight at the first time of asking.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 39 | 26 | 7 | 6 | 56 | 29 | 27 | 83 | |
| 2 | 38 | 23 | 11 | 4 | 76 | 25 | 51 | 80 | |
| 3 | 38 | 21 | 15 | 2 | 52 | 11 | 41 | 78 |
Gustavo Hamer and Tyrese Campbell’s Sheffield United performances are helping them keep their charge up.
If promotion is achieved, Sheffield United fans will be seriously hoping they can have a better go of it in the Premier League than they did in 2023/24.
The club set a record for number of goals conceded in the Prem, with a staggering 104 goals being scored against The Blades in 38 games.
That’s a feat they’ll be desperate to avoid next time they make it into the top flight, and fans have already set their sights on a bold transfer that could help prevent the stunning defensive failure.
Sheffield United fans call for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire to return
Blades fans have suggested a dramatic return for their ex-player Harry Maguire in a transfer from Manchester United.
Maguire, who was born in Sheffield, came through the club’s youth system before departing for Hull City in 2014.
While at the club, he won several personal accolades as he helped Sheffield United fight for promotion from League One.

Fans have laid out their rationale for the centre back’s dramatic return, claiming that Manchester United could sell him due to their dire PSR situation and needing to sell to bring in new players.
One said: “I just checked and can’t believe he’s only 32. It’d depend on what other clubs would be interested in him and his wage demands but I don’t think he’d be the worst gamble.”
Another Blades supporter suggested the club’s new owners could “make a statement” with the England international rejoining the club.
While one Sheffield United follower set his sights on another high profile defensive addition: “I’d love a Maguire and Walker return next season.”
“Both are out of favour at their club and both have been very vocal about wanting to return to the club at some point,” they said. “So why not now, whilst their legs still work and they can actually help us build something.”
However, other Blades fans were a bit more realistic about their options: “Maguire is still a regular in the Man Utd and England squads. He’s comfortably one of the best defenders in the country.”
“There’s absolutely no way he would come to a newly promoted team, much as I’d love to have him back,” they added. “He could go to West Ham on £200k a week for a couple of years. His game doesn’t rely on lightning pace so he can keep going for a while yet I reckon.”
Another highlighted how big an issue Maguire’s pay would be for the club: “He’s on massive wages whilst being a regular England international when fit there’s no chance he comes to us even if we wanted him.”
While one Sheffield United fan added it wouldn’t make sense with his recent trajectory at Manchester United: “Man Utd extended his contract in January, Amorim seems to have a place for him in his system so I doubt it, and the wage structure would just get absolutely decimated.”
What signing Harry Maguire would mean financially for Sheffield United
Currently, Harry Maguire is on £190,000 a week according to The Athletic. His contract expires in June 2026 after the club triggered a one-year extension in January.
His current market value is £12.5m according to Transfermarkt.
When Sheffield United were last in the Premier League, their most expensive signing was Cameron Archer who they paid £18m for.
However, Archer was just 21 years old at the time, and paying a similar fee for a 32-year-old Maguire would be a very different prospect.
As mentioned by some of the Blades fans too, the Manchester United centre back’s wage demands would have to be lowered by a considerable amount to get anywhere near the wage structure of the club.

Maguire has also been experiencing issues with injuries in the last two years, with the former United captain out for significant amounts of time both this season and last.
One injury even kept him out of Euro 2024, where he would have played a significant role for England had he been fit.
Therefore signing Maguire – if he even wanted to make the move – would represent a serious gamble for Sheffield United, one they seem very unlikely to make.
