Sheffield Wednesday create ‘unusual situation’ for Pierce Charles amid Dejphon Chansiri defiance

Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper Pierce Charles has been left in the dark regarding his future, with his representatives keen to know one key detail.

It has been a whirlwind number of months for Sheffield Wednesday, who, under the stewardship of Dejphon Chansiri, have been dragged through the mire.

This summer saw several first-team players move on to pastures new, either for a fee significantly lower than their value or for free.

Surprisingly, Pierce Charles did not leave Sheffield Wednesday despite Premier League interest.

The Northern Irish international still has admirers and is likely to attract further attention once he is up and running after his recent injury setback.

However, things have been made difficult for Chansiri and his representatives, with Dejphon Chansiri leaving them with one notable frustration.

Pierce Charles faces ‘frustration’ with Sheffield Wednesday and Dejphon Chansiri

Speaking to EFL Analysis’ Chief Transfer Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, we can confirm that Pierce Charles faces a ‘frustration’ with Sheffield Wednesday due to the lack of clarity over his price tag, although interest still remains in the goalkeeper.

Bailey said: “There are clubs in Scotland, clubs in France, Spain, Italy. Everyone loves him. He’s one of the best young keepers in Europe. And, he’s got the added bonus of having first-team football under his belt.

“There isn’t a price tag on his head because they’re still not talking. So even when you speak to Charles’s representatives, they don’t know the fee. And that’s a frustration. Clubs are ringing them asking what it would take to get him out and they literally don’t know the answer, which is an unusual situation. It won’t stop clubs trying, though.

“I think it’ll take an awful lot of work to get him out before next summer. But again, with the off-field stuff, we just don’t know with Sheffield Wednesday. We certainly don’t know what’s around the corner.”

Charles was linked with several moves in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Rangers notably interested in his services.

Pierce Charles stats for Sheffield Wednesday

It is safe to suggest that Pierce Charles is one of Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest prospects and Dejphon Chansiri’s most valuable assets at the club.

In 18 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, Charles has conceded 27. His emergence into the Owls’ first team was enough to earn him opportunities for Northern Ireland, having notched eight caps, which include three successive clean sheets in his opening three games for his country.

Ethan Horvath has done well to step up and fill Charles’ shoes after the Sheffield Wednesday star suffered an injury, but that does not undermine how much of a loss the young goalkeeper could be if he is sold.

Unfortunately for Charles, the current situation gives him very little clarity on his future, which makes staying at the club for the rest of the 2025/26 season much more likely.
