Sheffield Wednesday fans celebrate latest takeover update, but there’s debate over one thing they ‘don’t need’

Dreams of a transformative takeover at Sheffield Wednesday could become reality in what is set to be a turbulent summer for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday’s summer is poised to be turbulent following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Championship.

On the pitch, Danny Rohl’s Owls struggled for consistency and were condemned to a 12th-place finish in the second tier table.

However, the club are suffering most in matters off the field. Head coach Rohl has made clear he wants to leave Wednesday this summer, and interest in his services is rife among a host of clubs in Europe.

Owls fans are disillusioned with the current regime of chairman Dejphon Chansiri. With the Walton family’s interest in buying the club, EFL Analysis exclusively revealed this week that Sheffield Wednesday are the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia.

Sheffield Wednesday fans celebrate latest takeover update amid Saudi Arabian interest

Joy regarding the latest takeover update comes amid the potential for a nightmare summer at Hillsborough.

In an ideal world, Owls fans would wish for the German head coach to stay as Chansiri departs.

However, with fans claiming Rohl has “burned his bridges” at Wednesday, there could be a change both in the boardroom and dugout this summer.

With EFL Analysis’ news breaking this week, via information from our Chief football correspondent Graeme Bailey, that there is “active interest” from parties in Saudi Arabia and the potential for a new stadium, Wednesday fans took to social media to share their delight.

One Owls fan argued: “Don’t need a new stadium, just need it doing up”.

Another said: “Some of our fanbase needs to stop being so negative if you don’t have hope you don’t have anything”.

One Wednesday fan posted: “Our fans deserve some good luck”, as another said: “Good. Get proper clubs back in the Prem.”

Amid Saudi Arabian interest in Sheffield Wednesday, one fan said: “Please anyone but Chansiri”.

Another Owls fan hoped: “We can but dream”.

Despite the lucrative interest from Saudi Arabia, Chansiri has been adamant throughout this season he will only sell Sheffield Wednesday to the “right individual or group”.

How Dejphon Chansiri feels about Sheffield Wednesday potential takeover

Last month, Owls owner Chansiri penned an emotional open letter to the Wednesday supporters, in which the Thai businessman insisted that he “loves the club”.

He told SWFC: “I am still here for our club, for the future of all of us and please let me make my situation clear. I do not have the intention to sell, I love this club.

“But if today, tomorrow or another day in the future, if there is someone out there better, more suitable and has the potential to take care of our club, I am ready to pave the way for Sheffield Wednesday to move forward from a stronger position.

“I am happy to leave if Sheffield Wednesday is left in a better place. It is not just about the price, it is about the right individual or group to take our club forward.”

The success of Newcastle United is a prime example of how Saudi Arabian ownership can turn the fortunes of English football’s sleeping giants around, and therefore the Owls supporter base will be hoping their dreams of ownership change soon become a reality.
