Sheffield Wednesday have waited 19 years to get revenge on Wrexham after Hillsborough hammering

One of the most talked-about games this weekend will no doubt be Wrexham vs Sheffield Wednesday, and we’ve taken a look back in time at what happened the last time these two huge clubs met.

It’s been a fascinating last few years for Wrexham, who have climbed the EFL ladder rapidly thanks to the backing of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have been up and down and back up again, but things are not looking good for the Owls right now. Indeed, Wednesday are widely backed to finish rock bottom of the table this season.

Both sides have suffered back-to-back defeats in the first two games of the Championship season, so can either of them bring that run to an end this weekend when they meet at the Racecourse Ground?

Wrexham hammered Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 back in 2006

With the two teams having spent so long at different ends of the Football League ladder, it’s not surprising that we’ve waited 19 years to see Wrexham take on Sheffield Wednesday. In fact, it’s even longer to find the last league meeting between the pair, which was in January 2005.

The last game came in August 2006 in the first round of the League Cup, with a home tie for the Owls attracting just over 8,000 fans to Hillsborough.

On the day, it was the Red Dragons who triumphed and went on to the next round, with a very comfortable 4-1 win for the away side.

Goals from Neil Roberts, Chris Llewellyn, and Matt Done put Wrexham three up, before Glenn Whelan pulled one back for Wednesday. Mark Jones completed the rout for Wrexham with seven minutes to go.

Interestingly, the Sheffield Wednesday XI was not even weakened or rotated. The Owls still had the likes of Madjid Bougherra, Lee Bullen, Frankie Simek, and Chris Brunt in the line-up, so there’s not really any excuse for them losing so heavily to a team competing two divisions below them at the time.

Head-to-head record between Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham

Given their recent spell in the National League, and generally, their lack of top flight football, Wrexham have a few teams in the Championship that they’ve never even played (in the league) before.

However, there is some semblance of a history between the Owls and the Red Dragons, with 15 meetings between the two teams.

Despite that hammering in 2006, Sheffield Wednesday do dominate the head-to-head here with eight wins to Wrexham’s five, and two draws along the way.

Interestingly, though the two teams have a long history, their first meeting wasn’t until 1975. They played five times in the early 2000s, having gone 21 years without playing one another between 1982 and 2003.

Most of the time, Wrexham have gone into this fixture as underdogs, but given the summer the two teams have had this year, you’d have to say the Red Dragons are finally the favourites to get a win, especially given home advantage.
