Sheffield Wednesday striker is ‘back’ as he ‘finally’ ends his goal drought in Carabao Cup win

Sheffield Wednesday picked up their first competitive victory of the 2025/26 campaign on Wednesday evening, with a penalty shootout win over Bolton Wanderers.

In what was an incredible game at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, the hosts forced the game to penalties with a last minute equaliser through Amario Cozier-Duberry, levelling the game once again at 3-3.

The Owls led on three different occasions in the match, but their young side were pegged back on three different occasions in Greater Manchester, despite the Trotters going down to 10 men inside the first 30 minutes.

Nevertheless, Henrik Pedersen’s side prevailed, as they adopted the ‘siege mentality’ that Steven Schumacher told them to have. Yet, for one Sheffield Wednesday player, it was an even more important night.

Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Ike Ugbo breaking his duck

It had been nearly a full year since Ike Ugbo had last found the back of the net for the Owls, with a goal against Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup the last time he scored in a competitive game.

The 26-year-old did score in a pre-season friendly against Mansfield Town in July, but this will be a huge confidence boost for him, and Sheffield Wednesday fans could not quite believe it.

Another Owls supporter wrote: “Yesssss finally.”

A third said: “23/24 Ugbo’s back.”

While a fifth wrote: “Another good finish. Looked like Ugbo of old and will hopefully give him a boost!”

And one more Sheffield Wednesday fan was delighted: “So happy for him after last season.”

Ike Ugbo must feed off this confidence in the coming weeks

As the Owls continue to struggle with off-field problems, those on the pitch and in the dugout are continuing to make supporters proud.

Ugbo, who struggled greatly last season, will be hoping that he has finally turned a corner at Hillsborough and this can be the start of a new era for him in South Yorkshire.

Sheffield Wednesday need every senior player they have to play a role in the Championship in 2025/26, and therefore it is vital that the ex-Cardiff City man continues to be a threat in the final third.

The Owls are hoping for John Textor to complete a takeover sooner rather than later, but in the meantime, Ugbo will be hoping to solidify his place in the team as he looks to right the wrongs of the last year.
