One of the biggest games of the season is coming up this weekend, and experts have been trying to figure out their score predictions for Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United.
After a hectic week in the Championship, we’re set for another thrilling weekend of action and Sunday’s game between the Owls and the Blades will be the main attraction for neutrals and diehard fans alike.
Wednesday go into the game full of confidence after an astounding comeback against Norwich City in midweek, while United dropped points against a resolute Bristol City side.
While Chris Wilder’s side are chasing the title, Sheffield United do have weaknesses that their city rivals could exploit this weekend. So, which way will this game go?

Experts believe Steel City derby will be low-scoring affair
Discussing the upcoming fixtures on the Championship Check-In podcast, Benjamin Bloom and Sam Parkin couldn’t quite agree on the scoreline for the Steel City derby, but they both expect there to be very few goals in the game.
Bloom said: “This is gonna be so cagey… this has got to be under 1.5 goals right? I’m tempted to go 0-0.”
“It’s going to be so cagey. Sheffield United have the quality, and at home they got the win so surely away they draw? I’ll go for 0-0.”

Parkin mentioned the fact that this tie has, historically, been a low-scoring affair, at least in recent years.
He added: “Three of the last four have been 0-0. Just the one earlier this season that was 1-0.
“I was going to go for some goals, but I can’t do it. I’ll give you one goal, and I’ll go Sheffield United to win 1-0.”
And, as Bloom said, the victory would be “massive” for the Blades, with the expert adding this would be “a gigantic win going into the international break and the final eight games for them.”
How the Steel City derby has played out throughout history
Tensions will be high in this clash, that’s for sure. There’s so much on the line for both teams, with pride and bragging rights being just as important as the fact that United are hunting for the title, and Wednesday are pushing for a play-off place right now.
After the last meeting, Wilder mocked Rohl, causing uproar among the Owls faithful. Throw this element into the mix and there’s bound to be fireworks on Sunday, but, as the experts said, probably not many goals.
Over the years, Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United is a fixture that has been delicately poised, with 50 wins for Sheffield United, 48 wins for Sheffield Wednesday, and 47 draws between them.
There’s been just one goal in the last four meetings. A 4-2 win for United at Hillsborough back in 2017 is certainly an outlier here, with very few games actually having more than the odd goal in it.
| Date | Result | Competition |
| 07 Feb 2009 | Sheffield United 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday | League Championship |
| 18 Sep 2009 | Sheffield United 3-2 Sheffield Wednesday | League Championship |
| 18 Apr 2010 | Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Sheffield United | League Championship |
| 16 Oct 2011 | Sheffield United 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday | League One |
| 26 Feb 2012 | Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Sheffield United | League One |

| 04 Mar 2019 | Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Sheffield United | League Championship |
| 10 Nov 2024 | Sheffield United 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday | League Championship |
We’ve seen a whopping 27 1-1 draws in this fixture throughout history, but just eight goalless draws, so hopefully there will at least be some goals this time round.
Still, the Owls have won only two of the last ten Steel City derbies, with their last victory coming in 2012. Suffice to say, the odds are stacked against the home team for this one, but they would love nothing more than to put a big dent in their rival’s title bid.
