Southampton legend warns worry will ‘creep in’ unless his demands are met

Southampton have not made a fantastic start to life back in the Championship, as they collected six points from their opening five fixtures.

The Saints are aiming to be involved in the race for promotion come the end of the Championship campaign, and while it is still early in the season, they will need to start collecting points to ensure they leave no room for mistakes.

There will be confidence that Southampton can secure a second win of the campaign away to Hull City due to their record against the Tigers.

However, there they will have to be wary of Hull, who are trying to achieve a piece of history they last managed 74 years ago against the Saints.

Now a Southampton legend has spoken about his demands for the Saints, or the club will face an uphill battle for the rest of the campaign.

Franny Benali demands three wins from the next four Championship fixtures

Southampton legend Franny Benali has taken to the Southern Daily Echo to speak about the need for Southampton to win at least three of the next four fixtures.

He believes this is essential for the club should they wish to be competing for the play-offs at the end of the campaign.

Benali said: “With the exception of Boro, three of our next four Championship opponents go into this weekend in the division’s bottom six.

“It’s the league that requires our focus right now. With four games until the next international break, we need to start racking up points.

“If we can go unbeaten, picking up 10 or 12 points, that would be fantastic – if a little greedy from me. Anything short of nine points, though, and the worry will start to creep in.”

The key players for Southampton this season

Benali believes the summer signings have not had enough time yet to bed in and get used to the system under Will Still at Southampton.

However, he believes the current squad need to step up and find some results for Southampton so they can meet their ambitions.

He said: “There can be no complaints about the squad’s depth. If a player like Ryan Fraser drops out of the starting lineup, we have Leo Scienza, Jay Robinson, or Sam Edozie who can come in.

“If Jack Stephens or Taylor Harwood-Bellis pick up a knock, Joshua Quarshie, Nathan Wood and Ronnie Edwards are waiting in the wings for a chance to shine.

“Cameron Archer was in good form before facing Portsmouth, having scored in back-to-back games, but he received poor service last weekend.

“We are still waiting for someone to step up and show they can score consistently. Right now, I don’t see who that player is.”
