Southampton loanee wins accolade with Championship rivals while Will Still’s side struggle to click

One of Southampton’s players has had an impressive start to the season – but he’s not playing for them.

The Saints lost 3-1 at Hull City on Saturday, with new manager Will Still yet to secure another league win after the opening Championship victory over Wrexham.

They sit 19th in the table after six games, drawing three games and as of Saturday, losing two. This is despite Southampton spending the second highest amount on transfers in the summer window after shedding £48.7million.

There were plenty of Saints departures too – one of which being James Bree, who joined Charlton Athletic on loan on deadline day after being surplus to requirements at St Mary’s following Mads Roersle’s arrival from Brentford. Now, he’s sitting above his parent club in the table and has earned high praise on his full debut.

James Bree wins Player of The Match for Charlton Athletic in Sheffield United victory

Bree came in for fellow summer signing Rob Apter in Charlton’s last minute 1-0 win at Sheffield United on Saturday.

The trip to Bramall Lane marked his full debut after coming on for an initial cameo against Millwall last week.

The full back put the ball on a plate for goalscorer Isaac Tanto Olaofe, cutting through the Blades’ back line with a near perfect cross across the box for the former Stockport County man to calmly slot home.

Bree’s assist and his overall performance saw him voted as Charlton’s Player of The Match by the club’s fans.

Nathan Jones’ new stars shine in Kayne Ramsay’s absence

Nathan Jones was forced to switch up his back line after Kayne Ramsay was sent off after picking up a second yellow against Millwall and was handed a one game ban.

The Welshman put his former Luton Town centre-back Reece Burke in Ramsay’s place on the right of Charlton’s back three. Bree was then put into Apter’s position at right wing back.

The pair worked well together at Bramall Lane, and could well give Jones a selection headache moving forwards when Ramsay returns – but knowing the Addicks boss, he’ll be pleased competition for spots is hotting up even more than it has been already this season.
