Will Still has had a disjointed start to life as Southampton manager in the Championship as they aim to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

The Saints have won only one of their opening four Championship fixtures, with two draws and one defeat, not what Will Still or the squad will have hoped for.

However, it is still early in the season, and it is easy for Southampton to find form and become an unstoppable force under Still this season.

Still will hope that now that he has his squad confirmed after the transfer window, the Saints can crack on with their aims for the campaign; however, he will have to wait to start this until after the international break.

Yet, the new Southampton manager will be encouraged by the attitude of one of his stars who is on international duty and his determined outlook about how his squad may approach the rest of the season.

Shea Charles determined for Northern Ireland to qualify for the World Cup

While the majority of Southampton fans may not be interested in how Northern Ireland do in World Cup qualifying or if the Green and White Army reach the competition this summer.

However, their star Shea Charles’ attitude about achieving success on international duty will filter into his club career, as he needs to remain in form with Southampton to earn caps for Northern Ireland.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, he said: “I think the main thing is to not play the occasion and just carry on doing what I’m doing and be able to go out there and get results.

“I think no matter who we were going to play in the first game, it’s important to get a good start, and I think going away from home in the first game isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I think if we can go there and get a win, then we’ve still got three more home games to go, so I think it’s exciting.

“We’ve not really had long to prepare in this camp, but I think everyone’s excited to get out there and make a strong start.

“I feel we can qualify from the group.”

Shea Charles’ disappointment for his brother

Shea Charles has had to watch on from the outside and probably provide support for his brother, Pierce, while he continues to play his football at Sheffield Wednesday.

However, the goalkeeper is set to be on the sidelines for several months due to a shoulder injury, leading to the Owls needing to loan in a replacement.

Now, Shea Charles has opened up on the injury to his brother, who will now miss the opening World Cup qualifiers for Northern Ireland.

He said: “I’m gutted for him; he was doing so well at Sheffield Wednesday, and he was playing well for us, so it’s a bit of a blow for him and ourselves.”
