Sheffield Wednesday are facing a selection nightmare in goal ahead of this weekend’s clash away to Wrexham.
It’s been 19 years since the Owls face the Red Dragons, but after three successive promotions for Phil Parkinson’s side, they find themselves back in the second tier.
However, for the South Yorkshire outfit, it’s been a torrid summer. Late payments to players and non-playing staff has seen key members of the squad depart, including Josh Windass. Yet, due to injury, the versatile forward will not feature for Wrexham on Saturday.
Nevertheless, Sheffield Wednesday have injury problems of their own, with Pierce Charles a major concern after sustaining a shoulder problem against Stoke City.

Three replacements for Pierce Charles at Sheffield Wednesday
Alfie Whiteman
Alfie Whiteman finally left Tottenham Hotspur in the summer after coming through the club’s academy. The 26-year-old has not made an appearance for Spurs since 2020, and spent 2021 and 2022 on loan in Sweden with Degefors.

With Premier League and Europa League experience, Whiteman could be the perfect quick fix for Sheffield Wednesday as they look for their Charles replacement.
The club are restricted to loans and free agents for the next three transfer windows, and with limited options available in-house, Whiteman could be the perfect signing ahead of Saturday.

Mathew Ryan
Mathew Ryan, formerly of Brighton & Hove Albion, departed RC Lens in France a couple of months ago, despite only joining the club in January from Roma.

The Australia international, who has 96 caps to his name, was linked heavily with Derby County in July 2024, with Voetbal Primeur reporting that he was closing in on a move to the Rams from AZ Alkmaar.
Nevertheless, that deal never transpired and he is searching for a new club once again. Sheffield Wednesday are in desperate need of experience between the posts, and Ryan can provide that in droves.
However, the obvious drawbacks would be the Owls’ financial situation. They can only offer a maximum of £7k-a-week to a player on wages and it seems unlikely that the ex-Brighton man would accept that considering the clubs he has played for in the last year.
Jed Steer
As already stated, Sheffield Wednesday desperately need more experience in their goalkeeping department, and if this is to be a quick fix only, then Jed Steer could be the perfect player for Henrik Pedersen.

His Peterborough United contract expired at the end of June, and he is still looking for a new club. While it’s not the most exciting of potential signings, it does allow Charles to come back into the side and take his place as the number one goalkeeper without any questions being asked.
The Owls’ financial limits make this deal a realistic one, and Steer would be useful cover in the short-term.
