Henrik Pedersen faces a huge selection headache at Sheffield Wednesday as ‘injury concern’ raised

Sheffield Wednesday make the trip to Wrexham on Saturday afternoon, as they look for their first point of the season.

Josh Windass will not face his former club due to injury, with the versatile forward coming off the pitch in his new side’s defeat to West Brom at the weekend.

For the Owls, their hunt for salvation continues off the pitch, with fresh protests planned in London as supporters continue to fight against Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.

Sheffield Wednesday are in dire need of reinforcements, but with the club under a three-window transfer fee ban, they are limited to signing free agents and loan players only. Now, a fresh injury problem could leave Henrik Pedersen without one of his key squad members.

Pierce Charles is a doubt for Sheffield Wednesday

Keeping hold of players is crucial for the Owls and their relatively slim chances of survival this season. But there is also a great need to keep those stars fit, with Nathaniel Chalobah having already been struck down with injury.

Yet, there is a new issue for Pedersen to contend with, as Sheffield Wednesday look to be without their goalkeeper Pierce Charles for a substantial period, according to The Star.

The 20-year-old suffered a shoulder injury against Stoke City at the weekend, but tests indicate that the problem is worse than first thought.

Alex Miller said (via: X): “Understand there is a raised injury concern over star man Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles. He could face a spell out. Starlet stopper of continued big interest to other clubs. Would leave Owls very short between sticks.”

The Owls are incredibly light in the goalkeeping department

Chansiri is not willing to sell Charles at this moment in time, despite the funds that the club could bring in for the goalkeeper. Nevertheless, with the lack of options that Sheffield Wednesday currently have in that position, he is needed.

In-house replacements will have to do for the Owls this weekend if their number one cannot face Wrexham, in the two teams’ first meeting in 19 years.

Logan Stretch has been the back-up shot-stopper to Charles this season, but he still has not made his league debut, while Jack Phillips and Killian Barrett are both extremely inexperienced.

Pedersen has a very tough decision to make on Saturday in North Wales, and Sheffield Wednesday may well be put to the sword by Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground. However, it is also the opportunity for another young goalkeeper to make a name for themselves in the Championship.
