Southampton warned against making ‘ill-advised’ summer transfer decision by Sky Sports pundit

Southampton are back in the Championship for 2025/26 and must now build a squad capable of competing in the second tier.

Along with Leicester City and Ipswich Town, the Saints are returning to the second tier after just one season in the Premier League.

Southampton will benefit from parachute payments following their relegation, and it could be a big-spending summer at St Mary’s.

The south coast outfit have transfer interest in Luis Guilherme of West Ham, with the Hammers looking to net £20m for the player.

But the future of one of Southampton’s current stars is still up for debate heading into the latest window.

Southampton urged to keep Adam Armstrong

Adam Armstrong left the club late in the 2025 winter window, joining West Bromwich Albion on loan.

Middlesbrough looked at Armstrong before deciding to snap up former Leicester ace Kelechi Iheanacho instead.

The striker has since been a regular feature for the Baggies, who missed out on a place in the play-offs following a poor end to 2024/25.

Now, Armstrong is set to return to Southampton, and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has urged the club against selling him this summer.

He told Football League World: “He’s been a little bit in and out of the team at West Bromwich Albion, has Adam Armstrong. It probably hasn’t gone as well as either he or they would have hoped, as their disappointing end to the season suggests.

“Three goals in, I think, 15 games, but he has been a little bit in and out of the team towards the end.

“But, having said all of that, his record at Championship level would lead me to believe, especially what he did at Southampton in the Championship last season, that, from their perspective, they’d probably be ill-advised in selling him, in reality.

“From his perspective, obviously it depends on who is going to be the new head-coach, and how they will see his role at the football club.”

Adam Armstrong stats compared to Southampton top scorers

Armstrong has not exactly been prolific since moving to West Brom, scoring three in 15 Championship games.

His overall record in the competition is better, netting 80 and assisting 33 in 247 matches for various clubs.

Meanwhile, Southampton, as you would expect given where they are finishing the season, have struggled for goals.
