‘Strangest thing to happen this year’ – Championship fans stunned by Luka Modric’s latest move, Swansea supporters love it

Swansea City today announced that Luka Modric will become a minority shareholder in the club, and football fans are losing their mind at the idea.

It’s fair to say Swansea are not necessarily the biggest or most exciting football team in the Championship.

The Welsh outfit have put together a good run of results lately under Alan Sheehan, but they’re still sitting slap-bang in the middle of the Championship table, with no hope of going up or going down.

And yet, Swansea fans have just been given the most tantalising news this week, and they’re now the envy of clubs across the second tier and beyond.

That’s because Luka Modric is set to become a minority owner of the club, despite still playing for Real Madrid and hoping to continue his career there beyond this season.

It’s quite the turn of events, really. Modric is Real Madrid’s most decorated player, he’s won everything there is to win at the top level, and yet now, he will have a vested interest in the fortunes of a midtable second tier team for which he has no prior attachment to.

Fans online are going crazy over the news, with neutrals positively stunned by the revelation.

One fan described it as the “strangest thing to happen this year,” while another asked, “Why is Modric completing side quests?”

Others said, “What in the Football Manager?” and “Cardiff are going down and you’ve just signed Modric.”

Meanwhile, Swans fans are understandably over the moon. One claimed “The legend chose the right club,” while another added, “All of a sudden the feel good factor is back.”

Other Swansea supporters saw the funny side of it all, telling Modric, “Get on the pitch next season you,” and reminding Real Madrid that Swansea are, “happy to accept your young talent on loan on behalf of Luka. Team game… Do Luka proud.”

In all seriousness, though, Swansea fans do now expect some exciting moves in the transfer market, with one fan writing: “Talk about a shock this afternoon! I never, ever saw this coming but it’s brilliant news. There must be a couple of decent Croatians looking to break into Championship football… technically excellent players with great attitudes.”

Could this be the start of something special for Swansea City?

In his announcement video, Modric said: “Hi Swansea fans… I’m excited to be part of the journey.”

Exactly what that journey entails remains to be seen, but surely having someone like Modric behind the scenes can only be a good thing for Swansea.

You only have to look at the success of Birmingham City, Wrexham, and Burnley, who all have superstar backers behind them thanks to the interest of Tom Brady, Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and JJ Watt.

Brady has made ‘important’ changes at Birmingham, and has been cited as playing a ‘world class’ role in the evolution of the club over the last year.

If Modric can have anything like that kind of impact, we could be seeing a totally different Swansea next season. Now, who fancies Swansea for promotion in 2025/26?
