One Sunderland coach has mentioned the ‘special moment’ he was in awe of as the Black Cats gear up for the play-off final vs Sheffield United.

Sunderland have Sheffield United standing in the way of promotion to the Premier League after they overcame Coventry City in the play-off semi-final.

The Black Cats went into the second leg with a one-goal advantage that was gained by Eliezer Mayenda pouncing on a Coventry City mistake to make it 2-1 on the night, but it looked to be going to penalties in the second leg before Dan Ballard converted a fantastic last-minute header for Sunderland.

Chaos ensued as Ballard darted towards the corner flag, swinging his shirt as every Sunderland player followed him. It was a moment that will live long in the fans’ memory, and also for one member of Regis Le Bris’ coaching staff who believed it was a truly ‘special moment’ for the club.

Sunderland coach Alessandro Barcherini outlines the ‘special moment’ vs Coventry City

It was an incredible moment for all of those involved when Ballard slammed home his header, but also a sigh of relief for Regis Le Bris’ ranks, who notably have a very poor record in spot kicks this season.

The old cliche of the fans being the “12th man” is often overused, but it certainly was the case at the Stadium of Light, and that was noticed by the coaching staff.

Following the game, Sunderland goalkeeping coach Alessandro Barcherini took to LinkedIn to praise the supporters, as well as reflect on the ‘special moment’ that ensued on the hallowed Stadium of Light turf.

“Truly privileged to do what I do for a living and to have witnessed a special moment last night at the Stadium of Light,” said Barcherini. “The whole city turned up to back us and help us get over the line. Thank you.

“We know the job isn’t finished. 1 game left this season. On to Wembley we go.

“‘TIL THE END.”

Regis Le Bris must use Coventry City win as motivation ahead of Sheffield United clash

Throughout large quantities of the two legs against Coventry City, Sunderland found themselves massively under the cosh, but Le Bris’ well-thought-out tactics helped them to a smash-and-grab win against Frank Lampard’s side.

This should be motivation for the upcoming tie against Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Blades on top in regards to possession and creating chances; Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder will certainly want his players to stretch their arms and hit Sunderland at 100mph.

With this set to be the case, Sunderland can have confidence that soaking in the pressure and waiting for a counter or set-piece to capitalise does actually work, something that will require composure and patience from Le Bris’ side, but based on the Coventry display, that will no doubt be the case.
