Sunderland fans divided over how Regis Le Bris should approach selection for upcoming clash vs Bristol City

Sunderland have already booked their place in the Championship play-offs ahead of their Good Friday visit to potential play-off foes Bristol City.

Sunderland’s visit to Bristol City on Good Friday will have a monumental impact on the Championship play-offs.

Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats currently sit fourth and have already made their play-off place mathematically secure following their 0-0 draw at Norwich City last week.

Liam Manning’s side currently occupy fifth place in the Championship table with a handful of top-six hopefuls hot on their tail as the season reaches its climax.

With their play-off spot penciled in, and the risk of injuries to key stars clear at a precarious point in the season, Sunderland fans have been divided in debate as to how Le Bris should line the Black Cats up for Friday afternoon’s visit to Ashton Gate.

Sunderland fans divided over Regis Le Bris’ squad selection for Bristol City clash

Le Bris has admitted Enzo Le Fee won’t start the Robins clash, as the Black Cats boss manages the Roma loanee’s return from the sidelines, given Le Fee’s importance to Sunderland’s play-off hopes.

Borussia-Dortmund linked Jobe Bellingham may also miss out on a starting spot with a minor injury concern keeping him out of their last two games.

With Sunderland’s remaining fixtures inconsequential to their play-off finish, the fanbase has been divided over whether Le Bris should field a weakened team against their potential play-off rivals or go full throttle in search of momentum.

One Sunderland supporter said: “I’m perfectly fine with a weakened team at Bristol City. Good chance they will be our play-offs opponent so why give them an early look at what we have and then a month to figure out how to deal with it?”

Another added: “Bang on, they will be playing their strongest side from now till the play offs, and if we beat them with a weakened team even better”

However, one fan disagreed, stating: “Or they beat us which mentally gives them the edge in the playoffs.

“We should go full strength in my opinion as need to go into the playoffs with momentum”, to which one replied: “I’d much rather have a tactical advantage and much less fatigue than a slight possible mental edge, personally.”

Another Sunderland fan added: “We beat Bristol City and the chances are we play our bogey team (Coventry) over 2 legs. Rather play Bristol City… play a rotated side”

There are positives and drawbacks to both schools of thought, but Le Bris must make a bold call for Bristol City with his side’s future play-off fixtures in mind.

Regis Le Bris must make difficult selection call for Sunderland vs Bristol City

Le Bris is suffering a catch-22 situation at Sunderland given their season’s current state of limbo.

Sunderland have stuttered at precisely the worst moment with Championship play-offs looming next month.

So, does Le Bris play his best starting XI in hopes of picking up steam ahead of the upcoming play-off campaign?

Or, does he sacrifice momentum and results in the inconsequential remaining regular season games to wrap his top talents in cotton wool until May?

As one fan argued, the “tactical advantage and less fatigue” on offer by resting Sunderland’s crucial stars for Friday’s visit to Bristol City is a far more prosperous proposition than risking losing the likes of Le Fee and Bellingham for the play-offs.

Speculate to accumulate is the business term referring to the need to invest with risk in order to make meaningful gains.

In this case, Le Bris must risk momentum – and some points – within the remaining league fixtures at the behest of increasing the potential of play-off promotion glory.
