Supercomputer makes surprise Birmingham City prediction ahead of Blues’ Championship return

Birmingham City are going to be the ones to watch in the Championship this season.

Following a record-breaking League One campaign, Blues will be looking towards the top end of the second tier table.

Chris Davies wants to sign Chuba Akpom on loan from Ajax, although Ipswich Town have made a move for the striker after Middlesbrough were pegged back in their hunt for a reunion with the 29-year-old.

Nevertheless, it’s still been a successful summer for Birmingham and it would not be a surprise to see them pushing for a top six finish. However, one prediction has not quite put them where many will expect.

OPTA predicts Birmingham City to miss out on promotion push

EFL Analysis has already put out their 2025/26 Championship preview, and Blues look very strong. However, according to OPTA’s supercomputer, Davies’ side might be a little further away from the top six than hoped.

They have calculated Birmingham to finish 13th this season, just one place ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, who are facing significant financial difficulties.

Blues romped to the League One title in 2024/25 and they will be hoping to replicate Ipswich Town’s back-to-back promotions.

However, OPTA have given them just a 4.4% chance of finishing sixth, 3.3% chance of finishing in second and a 2.3% chance of winning the league title.

How OPTA’s supercomputer works

Despite a very good summer transfer window, Birmingham will finish in mid-table if this prediction does come true. However, how is it calculated?

OPTA uses market odds and their own ‘Power Rankings’ to work out how each result would pan out over the course of a 46 game season.

These are based on historical and recent performances, and with Blues playing in League One last season, that will have had an impact on where they have been placed in this table.

Nevertheless, a good start to the new campaign will see Blues rise up in the predictions, something that Tom Brady and Tom Wagner will be keen for as they continue to build the club’s exposure.
