The bizarre reason why Gillingham were banned from wearing their home kit in League Two clash

Gillingham were barred from wearing their home kit against AFC Wimbledon due to a bizarre reason.

The Gills hosted the promotion-chasing Wimbledon side on Easter Monday, winning 1-0 in a huge League Two game.

Their traditional home colours see Gillingham sport a blue shirt with white sleeves.

However, the EFL prevented them from wearing this against their opponents at the Priestfield Stadium on Monday for one bizarre reason.

EFL made ‘recommendation’ to Gillingham over home kit

Instead of their home shirt, Gillingham were forced to wear their third kit instead, which is a green and white strip.

This was because of an EFL ‘recommendation’ due to the fact that all three of Wimbledon’s kits clashed with the colours of the home side.

Before the game, the hosts made a light-hearted joke about the whole incident, tweeting: “up the greens”.

Despite the new look it was the same winning feeling as Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth extended his unbeaten to seven games.

Coventry City were once involved in the ‘worst kit clash of all time’

It’s not the first time an EFL club has been involved in a kit clash and it certainly won’t be the last.

Back in 1997 Coventry City hosted Chelsea. The two teams both play in blue – just different shades.

That didn’t satisfy the referee, who deemed it as a kit clash and as Chelsea had only brought their home shirt, were forced to wear Coventry’s away kit, darkening the badge for good measure to avoid any confusion.

Thankfully it didn’t impact the game too much and they were able to fulfil the fixture, with the hosts winning 3-1 on the day.

Footballer turned TV Presenter Dion Dublin was one of those on the scoresheet that day too in a truly weird encounter.
