Sheffield Wednesday star Josh Windass has spoken about his future amid his contract with the Owls running down.

It has been a turbulent season for the Yorkshire outfit, with a potential sale of Sheffield Wednesday among the key talking points.

Wedneday failed to pay player wages earlier this season and there is much uncertainty around a number of key figures at the club.

Danny Rohl is wanted by several teams, including the recently relegated Leicester City, should Ruud van Nistelrooy leave.

Meanwhile, there are a number of contract situations to be sorted out in the coming weeks.

When Sheffield Wednesday must begin contract talks with Josh Windass by

Sheffield Wednesday had a mixed 2024/25, with Josh Windass one of their most consistent performers throughout the campaign.

He scored 13 and assisted five in 44 Championship appearances but is currently due to leave the club on a free transfer on June 30.

Windass is not the only big name out of contract soon, with Michael Smith among the stars set to depart if fresh terms aren’t agreed.

While their contracts expire next month, one EFL rule means that Sheffield Wednesday have until May 17 to open talks (or tell a player they will be released) if their deals are due to expire this year.

It’s written: “Any Club wishing to re-engage a Contract Player whose contract is due to expire on 30 June must, save as mentioned in Regulations 68.2.1 to 68.2.4 below, notify him in writing by the third Saturday in May in the final year of his contract whether or not they offer him terms of re engagement specifying (where applicable) such terms.”

Clubs competing in the Championship play-offs are given an extended deadline, but that does not apply to Wednesday.

Josh Windass comments on Sheffield Wednesday future

Windass has commented on his future recently but remained rather coy in giving a definitive answer.

As per The Star, he said: “You never know in football. I don’t want to touch too much on that situation at the minute, I just want to enjoy the goal I’ve scored.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the summer… The games we’ve had, the moments I’ve had at this club.

“Obviously there’s been a couple of bad ones every now and then, but in terms of wearing the Sheffield Wednesday shirt, it was always a huge, huge honour.”

The Star adds that Windass is thought to have a clause in his current contract that would trigger an extension, but the details are unknown.
