The EFL have made an announcement for Burnley vs Sheffield United that will surely anger Chris Wilder

The stakes couldn’t be higher in the Championship promotion race when Sheffield United travel to Burnley in the evening kick-off.

It’s a must-win match for Sheffield United as they aim to stay in the promotion picture, with a draw or defeat effectively ending their chances of finishing in the top two.

Chris Wilder’s men didn’t let the pressure get to them on Friday as Sheffield United’s 2-0 win over Cardiff City kept them in the hunt, as they currently trail Leeds United and Burnley by five points.

A huge three points for the Blades at Turf Moor would pile pressure onto the Clarets heading into the final two games, potentially setting up a thrilling finale.

But as pundit Sam Parkin predicts the result of Burnley vs Sheffield United, the EFL have made a huge announcement for the clash that will warrant mixed responses.

David Webb will referee Burnley vs Sheffield United

All eyes will be on this massive promotion showdown on Monday evening, and as Burnley haven’t been beaten at home all season, the visitors need everything to go their way to secure all three points.

Ahead of the six-pointer in Lancashire, the EFL have announced that David Webb will referee the contest, with Dean Whitestone as his fourth official.

Webb is an experienced referee who mainly operates in the Championship, and Sheffield United have been involved in matches he’s officiated in the past.

The Englishman has taken charge of 25 United games in total and the last of those was in February as Leeds beat Sheffield United 3-1 at Bramall Lane.

That was one of six defeats the Yorkshire side have tasted with Webb in charge, winning 14 and drawing the remaining five matches.

Funnily enough, though, their promotion showdown against the Whites wasn’t the most controversial game refereed by Webb.

Wilder was left fuming by ‘astonishing’ David Webb call in 2019

In April 2019, Sheffield United were held to a 1-1 draw by Millwall after Jake Cooper headed home a 95th minute equaliser.

The result happened in controversial circumstances, as Wilder was fuming at the referee Webb for failing to penalise Ryan Leonard for a trip on David McGoldrick, moments before Cooper levelled the scores.

Speaking after the game, Wilder felt it was ‘astonishing’ that Webb didn’t see that foul on McGoldrick, making his feelings on the official known.

“To get that decision wrong, right in front of him, is astonishing,” he said via The Star. “Did we deserve three points? No, and I’m not blaming the performance of the team on the ref.

“But to miss a situation like that, right in front of him… there’s quite a bit to play for at this level and the stakes are quite high.”

Wilder even ran onto the pitch to confront Webb after the final whistle to tell him he got the decision completely wrong, and the Blades boss will be hoping there’s less drama involved when they clash against Burnley.
