‘The place to come’… What Peterborough United owner said about ‘blockbuster’ deal as Rangers snap up League One ace

League One side Peterborough United have completed the sale of a star player, leading to the owner putting out a statement on social media.

As the 2025/26 League One campaign draws closer, several sides are bolstering their options in the summer transfer window.

Peterborough United, for example, will be expecting a much-improved season under Darren Ferguson, where Posh must build on a disappointing 18th-place finish in League One.

Nonetheless, Ferguson’s side were able to lift the Football League trophy after seeing off Birmingham City 2-0 at Wembley Stadium – a reason for optimism going into next season.

Peterborough have committed to the sale of one player going into the new season; however, Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony has much to be optimistic about over the signing.

Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony reflects on sale of Emmanuel Fernandez to Rangers

It was confirmed yesterday night that Peterborough United had sold Emmanuel Fernandez to Rangers, with the 23-year-old committing to a four-year deal at the Ibrox.

Fernandez bagged five League One goals for Ferguson’s side last season, playing an integral role for Peterborough.

It is suggested that the Posh have raked in a £4.5million fee after selling Fernandez to former Southampton and Swansea City boss Russell Martin’s side.

Reflecting on the sale, Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony spoke about how ‘delighted’ he was to move on a player who joined the club on a free.

Delighted to play a part taking a young man for £0, let our wonderful coaches do their thing, the club have an awful season winning another trophy & see him end up at a Champions League club in another blockbuster deal.”

MacAnthony then went on to suggest one reason why Peterborough are the club to join in League One.

“Another message to all young talent out there & their agents that regardless of recent ‘short term’ sentiment re us being written off – [Peterborough] is the place to come & has been for many years.”

Peterborough fans will expect significant investment after Emmanuel Fernandez’s sale

As MacAnthony sarcastically writes about the ‘awful season’ Peterborough had, where they picked up silverware, there will still be plenty of expectation that a significant improvement is undertaken in the league campaign.

With £4.5million, fans will be expecting that recruits are brought in, notably to replace Fernandez, but also in the defensive region.

Shipping goals was Peterborough’s issue last season, having conceded 81, the second highest in the division. Having lost powerful centre-back Ronnie Edwards in recent years, it is clear that they haven’t managed to find his suitable successor yet, but with the seven-figure sum picked up in the Fernandez deal, it is hoped that MacAnthony pumps that back into Ferguson’s budget.
