Tom Brady ‘still thinking about’ Birmingham striker as he praises Blackburn performance

Birmingham fans understandably enjoyed their second last-minute winner in four days as they came from behind to take all three points home from Blackburn – and Tom Brady was no exception.

The Blues secured a late 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Wednesday in the first round of the Carabao Cup through Jay Stansfield.

The former Fulham striker stepped up to equalise in the 90th minute from the penalty spot at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Lyndon Dykes then made it 2-1 at the death, finding the net in the eighth minute of added time to send the Brum end into raptures.

After the game, Chris Davies praised the Birmingham fans in their celebrations with his players, as 7,000 of them looked on to see their side win in dramatic circumstances.

Miles away in the United States, minority owner and NFL legend Tom Brady was also joyous, piling praise on the performance of one player in particular.

Taking to Instagram after the game, Brady reposted the Blues’ picture of Dykes celebrating the victory at the end of the game, punching the air at the raucous travelling fans.

“Still thinking about that finish,” the New England Patriots icon wrote, tagging Dykes in his story.

Birmingham’s other goalscorer, Stansfield, Ethan Laird and Demarai Gray also stood out in Saturday’s performance in Blackburn as Davies’ side went sixth in the Championship table.

“On the road, extra time, still fighting,” Brady wrote on another post of Stansfield. “2 goals in 8 minutes to take all 3 points. LET’S GO BLUES”

It was Gray’s industrious run down the wing on the right as the Blues went on the counterattack from a Rovers corner that led to Dykes poking home.

Reposting a clip of Gray celebrating the second goal to his 15.2 million followers, Brady said: “Cool under pressure.”

Dykes hasn’t always been in the starting XI at St Andrew’s, but he is certainly doing more than just making up the numbers.

The 29-year-old signed from Queens Park Rangers in 2024 for a reported £1million as the Blues looked to build a League One super team to go straight back up to the second tier.

He missed a portion of the second half of the season due to a calf injury and made nine starts in the 25 games he played in the third tier. However, Alfie May was the striker that got sold by Birmingham this summer, not the Scotland international.

First choice Stansfield has scored three in three so far this season, while £10million summer signing Kyogo got off the mark for Blues against Sheffield United in mid-week.

Dykes’ last-ditch winner and performance as a substitute against the Blades shows he’s keen to stay at St Andrew’s and prove he can be key to Davies’ side’s potential promotion push. His contract runs until 2027.

However, he will have to compete against Werder Bremen’s big loss Marvin Ducksch soon.
