Tom Fellows made his debut for Southampton in the 0-0 draw with Portsmouth, not his dream start to life with the Saints, but one he can build upon.
While he failed to have his desired impact, like he has done with West Brom over the past few seasons, he was at the centre of controversy as he was accused of trying to injure Portsmouth players by John Mousinho, the Pompey manager.
Fellows will look to put this behind him and kickstart his Southampton career with a win this Saturday away at Hull City.
A win away at the Tigers will help him achieve the reason he has now revealed behind his decision to make the move from West Brom to Southampton.

Tom Fellows liked the ambition of Southampton wanting to compete in the Premier League regularly
Southampton have not got off to a dream start under Will Still in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League last season.
However, it takes time to get to know the new manager’s approach and for new signings like Fellows to bed in, and this is exactly what he will be hoping as he looks to ensure he is vindicated in leaving West Brom for Southampton.
Speaking with the Southern Daily Echo, he said: “Look at Southampton; they’re such a big club and have aspirations not just to be a Premier League club but to stay in the Premier League.
“They want to try and cement themselves in that division, so when they talk to you about it, you know it’s pretty clear and they have good ambitions.

“It made me want to join them, and, yeah, I’m glad I did. I’m enjoying it so far, and now I can’t wait to sort of play some more games, really.”
West Brom currently occupy fifth in the Championship, while Southampton occupy 15th; however, Fellows believes the quality and depth of the Saints squad will prove telling across the long season in his ambition of being a Premier League player.

Will Still was key to Tom Fellows joining Southampton
Fellows appeared to be thriving under Ryan Mason at West Brom, as he was impacting games and helping the Baggies secure results early on in the Championship campaign.
However, after a conversation with Will Still about the role he would have at Southampton, he believed it was an opportunity he could not refuse.

He said: “He wanted some good wingers with attacking threat, and he said he can see me fitting into that well.
“Obviously, I had a good chat with him, and he made it clear that I can use my attributes well here and fit in with the team and ultimately help the team.”
