Walsall took a massive step towards promotion today with a victory in their League Two play-off semi-final against Chesterfield, and fans are drooling over one player in particular.
A few months ago, it seemed Walsall would be going up to the third tier as champions of League Two, but a dramatic drop in form cost them dearly as the season went on.
The Saddlers had to settle for a play-off spot after finishing fourth in the table, and now, Chesterfield stand in their way.
However, with statistics on Walsall’s side, and a 2-0 away win today, Mat Sadler’s men are surely on course for a trip to Wembley and will now be dreaming of promotion.

Walsall fans want Alfie Chang to sign permanently
A penalty tucked away by Taylor Allen gave Walsall the lead just before the half-hour mark on a sunny afternoon in Chesterfield today, before Alfie Chang fired a great hit from the edge of the box to double their advantage after 39 minutes.
The game was effectively over by half-time, and Walsall fans have been quick to share praise for Chang on social media.
They’re so happy, in fact, that there has been an outpouring of messages demanding Walsall sign Chang permanently after his loan spell from Birmingham City comes to an end.
Reacting to Chang’s first senior goal, one Walsall fan wrote: “That kid’s a joke. He should be our first summer signing if we go up, oozes class.”
Another added, “Superb finish after a really good set up,” while a third said, “Any Birmingham fans should know that Changy is one heck of a player. Controls that midfield so well, honestly so composed for a youngster.”
Others were begging Birmingham to let the 22-year-old leave, writing, “Please Blues let us have him he’s brilliant,” and “Alfie Chang, you have earned yourself a pint.”

Alfie Chang’s stats on loan at Walsall this season
Chang joined Walsall in January, and has had to be patient to get his big break for the Saddlers. Indeed, he only made five appearances in League Two towards the end of the campaign, but gradually became more and more important as the games went by.
The young midfielder only played 13 minutes in his first two games for Walsall, but then started the next three, racking up 70 minutes in each.

Now, in another start, he’s scored what could prove to be an absolutely crucial goal if Walsall can get promoted.
Whether Birmingham would actually let him leave or not remains to be seen. However, with the Blues heading for the Championship, there’s every chance they will want Chang to get another season under his belt with Walsall, especially if they are fighting it out in League One next year.
