Tom Cleverley was sacked by Watford on Tuesday in news that shocked almost nobody.
Cleverley recently changed agents and although that was believed to have no role in the decision, owner Gino Pozzo has tried to justify his decision by claiming that they need a “more experienced coach” to secure promotion from the Championship.
In the full statement, that can be viewed on Watford’s website, Pozzo said went on to add that their results post-Christmas were equivalent to a side battling relegation.
However, he added that he believes the Hornets have “made the correct decision for the good of the football club.”
The Italian is already an unpopular figure at Vicarage Road as it is and he’s hardly won back the trust of supporters after his latest comments.

How Watford fans have reacted to Gino Pozzo statement
No sooner than Pozzo’s statement released were there Watford fans hitting back at the reaction on X.
@wfccaity replied: “This guy is actually delusional.”
@FreyaQuinton doubled down, adding: “Every year we say we are pushing for the PL but end up mid table with seemingly similar tactics. I’d love to know what changes will be made for next season…”
@smith1475 wrote: “Why did you employ Tom in the first place if you think we need a manager with experience. And if the new guy doesn’t at the least get us into the playoffs then he’ll be gone as well? You are going to need to invest in some decent players which you haven’t done in years!”
@JordanWiemer stated: “Deluded and disingenuous.”
@BradleyHayden11 also said: “Disagree with all of this. It’s time the recruitment team, and most importantly, the owner and chairman looked in the mirror instead of blaming everyone else apart from themselves.”
Who will become the next Watford manager?
Many say managing Real Madrid or Manchester United is the toughest job in football. Being Watford manager for more than a season is even more difficult.
Whoever dares to take on the job knows they’ll have to start quickly and punch above their weight or face the chopping block.
All previous 19 managers have failed to reach 70 matches in charge of Watford.
A return for Sean Dyche could be on the cards but he may have his sights set on a more attractive role.
First Team Coach Alberto Garrido is another name in some corners. As Pozzo alluded to, he wants to develop youth players and Garrido did that by being assistant head coach at Real Madrid Castilla.
Steve Cooper and Russell Martin are also potential options.
