‘We don’t know’… Sheffield Wednesday leave manager with doubts ahead of Championship season

Sheffield Wednesday’s 2025/26 season will get underway this weekend against Leicester City.

Danny Rohl left the Owls this summer, leaving new manager Henrik Pedersen to take charge of pre-season and, for what most assume, will be a relegation battle.

Despite losing their manager and a number of senior players already, Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a positive prediction for their 2025/26 campaign by a supercomputer.

Their season will get underway on Sunday, August 10, against Leicester City.

The Foxes suffered relegation from the Premier League, and though they have their own financial problems, they still have a fairly strong squad going into their first campaign back in the Championship.

Leicester City manager shares Sheffield Wednesday verdict

Like Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester have undergone a managerial change this summer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy departed, and former Queens Park Rangers boss Marti Cifuentes is now at the helm.

Cifuentes has overseen the bulk of their pre-season and, after their final outing of the summer, has discussed the Owls.

When doing so, he admitted he doesn’t know what to expect from Wednesday after the changes to their squad.

He said, as per The Star: “The idea for us was to have a good pre-season and then to focus on Sheffield Wednesday. We know them from the last two seasons when I met them several times, but obviously we don’t know exactly what to expect.

“We have full respect for all the clubs, especially a club with the history of Sheffield Wednesday. Let’s see what we’re going to face next Sunday. We’ll always be ourselves and the way that we want to play.”

Will Sheffield Wednesday set unwanted Championship record

The Yorkshire outfit go into this weekend’s fixture with a threadbare squad largely made up of young players.

Barry Bannan has signed a new contract, which should come as a big boost for them.

But Sheffield Wednesday could set an unwanted record for the lowest points total in the history of the Championship, one pundit has suggested.

Ryan Dilks said: “The fewest points tally in Championship history is 23. We don’t want to see that beaten this year, but considering the current squad situation… you’d say there’s a good possibility.

“It’s going to be a very miserable few months for Sheffield Wednesday with this guy in charge… we’re in uncharted territory here. Henrik Pedersen is in a no-lose situation, though. No one is expecting anything really, but good luck to him.”
