Charlton Athletic have confirmed the signing of Onel Hernandez, teeing up a potential battle with Ipswich Town’s Marcelino Nunez.
The transfer window may have closed on 1 September, but Championship clubs are still striking deals.
Leicester City snapped up goalkeeper Fran Vieites almost a week after the transfer window closed.
Charlton Athletic have now added a new face, as free agent Onel Hernandez has penned a short-term deal with the Addicks.

Onel Hernandez returns to the Championship after Marcelino Nunez feud
The move sees Hernandez return to English football after leaving Norwich City over the summer.
Hernandez spent seven years with the Canaries before leaving at the end of his contract in June.
The Cuban winger racked up more than 200 games for Norwich, and also had spells with Middlesbrough and Birmingham City.
Hernandez’s return means he will now face former Canaries team-mate Marcelino Nunez in what could be a feisty encounter.
Hernandez blasted Nunez over the summer and threatened to ‘break’ the midfielder after he joined Ipswich Town.
Nunez’s move to Ipswich infuriated Norwich fans, and Hernandez considered the Chilean’s move to be unforgivable.
When will Onel Hernandez face Marcelino Nunez?
Hernandez won’t have to wait long for a game against Nunez.
Charlton travel to take on Ipswich on 21 October, their second game back after the upcoming international break.
Hernandez won’t have long to get up to speed, and a starting role at Portman Road may be a long shot.
Hernandez would surely love to play some kind of role in that game, though the referee on the night may just keep an eye on any potential clash with Nunez.
Charlton have only signed Hernandez until January, but he could face Ipswich on 22 April in 2026 if he lands a contract extension.

Nathan Jones on Onel Hernandez deal
Charlton boss Nathan Jones is certainly excited to see Hernandez in action after bringing him in on trial.
Jones has told Charlton’s official website that he loves Hernandez’s dribbling ability and ‘wonderful athleticism’.
“Onel brings real good Championship experience. We’ve had a look at him as he’s been training with us for a few weeks, and he’s got wonderful athleticism and real one-v-one quality,” said Jones.
“We felt that we just wanted to add in that department. We’ve got TC [Tyreece Campbell], we’ve got [Rob] Apter, we’ve got Ibby [Fullah] who can do that, but we just wanted to bring a bit of Championship experience in terms of the one-v-one ability. He’s come in, he’s looked sharp and he’s shown his quality,” he added.
Jones will now look to get Hernandez up to speed quickly after Charlton’s bright start to the Championship season.
