WhoScored’s Championship Team of the 2025/26 Season so far emerges with one glaring omission

After the opening four games of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, the top talents in each position are starting to come to the forefront.

Middlesbrough went into the first international break of the season at the top of the Championship table after Boro’s “brilliant” start under Rob Edwards.

With Middlesbrough’s £6.5m signing of David Strelec, Edwards’ side are poised to continue their impressive run against Preston North End this weekend.

West Brom, who face Derby County this weekend, currently occupy second spot after a stellar start from Ryan Mason’s side.

Sheffield United shockingly sit rock-bottom after an embarrassing start for Ruben Selles, and unsurprisingly, no Blades players feature in the Championship Team of the Season so far.

Championship Team of the Season so far includes Kieffer Moore

In typical second tier fashion, the 2025/26 Championship has been surprising in every echelon of the table.

There were fears at Boro about the former Luton Town boss earlier in the summer, but Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson got the Edwards appointment absolutely right, given their league-leading form.

Not many Championship supporters would have predicted Stoke City to storm to third with three wins from the opening four.

At the opposite end, Sheffield United were tipped as title favourites, but Selles’ side remain the only Championship outfit still on zero points heading into the weekend’s round of fixtures.

Now, the Championship Team of the Season so far, according to the football statistics website WhoScored, has emerged with several surprising omissions.

Stoke signed Sorba Thomas from Huddersfield Town this summer and the Welsh international has notched a staggering two goals and three assists in just four outings under Mark Robins.

Thomas’ international teammate Kieffer Moore left Sheffield United for Wrexham in the window, and has made a stellar start for the Dragons with three goals in four after his brace in the Sheffield Wednesday stalemate.

Evidently, there are several glaring omissions from WhoScored’s Championship Team of the Season so far, akin to the likes of Boro’s in-form central midfield duo Hayden Hackney and Aidan Morris.

Aside from those, the absence of one second tier star is particularly notable.

Barry Bannan should be in Championship Team of the Season

Despite the ongoing financial crisis overseen by owner Dejphon Chansiri, the shining light at Sheffield Wednesday continues to be their veteran skipper Barry Bannan.

Following a turbulent summer at Hillsborough, Bannan signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract which brought some long-awaited positive news for the suffering Owls fanbase.

Already this season, it is evident that the 23rd-placed Owls’ hopes of surviving relegation to League One rest on their dynamic Scottish midfielder’s shoulders.

Bannan tops the Championship chances created list alongside Southampton full-back Ryan Manning, with 12, but his efforts have only resulted in one assist.

Therefore, the Sheffield Wednesday forwards need to start burying the chances carved out by Bannan.

If the 35-year-old manages to captain the Owls to safety once again, then the Scot will surely be included in the Championship Team of the 2025/26 season come May.
